Clutch replacement for ford tractor

I am replacing my clutch on my 75 model 4600 ford and the old clutch plate had three pads. What is the reason for the use of three pads verses a full clutch plate ?

You saw those button clutches in industrial models - hard use, lots of slippage, going fore and aft, loader work, etc.
They eat flywheels.
What are you using the tractor for? If normal ag work I would have your flywheel resurfaced and go back to an organic type disc.

Those ceramic button style clutches are hard on a drive line because they have no slip. It's either in or it’s out there is no soft engagement.
While a organic clutch will slip if you get it hot a ceramic clutch holds better the hotter you get it.

If you are using the tractor for general ag work a full face organic clutch may be better for you.

More than likely they went to the button/puck disc to hold more power. It was probably cheaper to convert this part than the rest of the clutch system, flywheel and clutch housing/trans case.

In my mind I would think more surface contact would transmit more power. Do you think this is something Ford did or is this an aftermarket clutch plate

Not necessarily. Clutches are built to hold a certain amount of torque, exceed that and it starts to slip. To hold more torque one could change the friction material to something that has a higher coefficient of friction. Increasing the average diameter of the friction area, not always possible. Increase the spring pressure, more pedal effort required. Increase the number of discs, think big trucks, JD two cylinders...

If for instance you increase the area, you have the same force applied from the pressure plate. You will have less psi on the friction material resulting in less holding power per puck, but since there are extras you end up at basically the same capacity with a disc that may wear longer. If we had all the numbers we could run the math and prove it out.
