OT..in regards to those that teach...

All,

I had the parents that held me responsible for each and every goof off I did.

Teachers, principals, adults, uncles, aunts, busdrivers, etc,; they had the knowledge that an errant kid (me) was going to see worse when getting home.

My parents were afraid that "their" kid was going to embarrass them. The result was a set of parents that kept their five kids in line.

My fear, a true fear of discipline from anyone other than my folks, kept me and my siblings on the straight and narrow.

I think any blame was squarely put upon the person that had made the foul. Behave and there is no issue; misbehave, and take your chances.

I think my parents were strict, but out of necessity. Heck, a good home, good food, good discipline;, well, it really hasn't done me much harm.

Punctuation, spelling, and proper sentence structure are not my priority, rather the message.

Things in our society went down hill when they took corporal punishment out of the schools. If anything it should have been closely supervised rather than taken out altogether. A kick in the pants will get anyone's attention. But where do we start? With the parents, the teachers?

I had to behave. I recieved the razor strap and belt often. I guess I was a slow learner.
At age 64 I can say that I deserved every licken I got and I am glad now that I got them.

It has to start with the parents. I never had a teacher lay a hand on me in my life. All it took was a call to the old man. I would have much rather the teachers punished me, but living in a small town the word would have gotten back home and I shudder to think of what happened then. My parents had something called pride, something I think is lost today. I think its confused with wealth and possesions.

A good thing about our local school system, they can still whip the kids, and do. In Louisiana it is the school districts choice whether to allow whipping the students and about 3/4 of the districts allow corporal punishment.

My mom/dad worked they did not have the time to deal with my issues.. I took what they dished out at school and sure as ell did not want what was dished out at home...

When folks don't work and live on top of each other all that have to do is argue and fight each other but don't mess with moms little baby's.... They are all they own... Its a mess a mess we may be stuck with... You mix your kids with theirs your kids more then likely learn there ways...

Casenut1 you hit it squarely on the head. The biggest problem we have is politicans using the pretense of education reform to build their political careers. They blame teachers for childrens behavior not the parents.

I only got the razor strap once; that was enough for me. My offense was taking a dip in the stock tank to cool off on a hot day - while the cattle stood around waiting to get a drink so they could cool off.

Never did that again!

I graduated in 1982, and we were already seeing families that THEIR kids could do no wrong! Small school in the Sandhills of Nebraska.
American discipline began declining in the 60s!

I have been a teacher and I still sub. Kids don't respect teachers today because there are a lot of jerky teachers. Kids are people too and they deserve a little respect. A lot of todays teachers cope attitudes because they graduated from some state teachers school. I have never had a problem with kids.
You don't need to beat them or threaten them. Simply treat them decently.

"using pretense of education reform to build their political careers" Wow, you hit the nail square on the head with that statement.

LAA,

Perhaps LA has got it right. I know for a fact that a spanking did no harm to any of my siblings, just me.

Naw, now that I think of it, spanking did me no harm either.

HoboNC,

Your first sentence says it all. I, too, did not want to have my folks know I drew the attention of the adults at school.
