Universal Tractor Fluid

I'm needing to buy some UTF for a ford 4400 with a selecto-o-speed however im having a little difficulty understanding the word of hydraulic fluids. From what I can tell I need a fluid that meets ford/new holland M2C134D spec. The tractor will need to function in temps from 0-100 Deg F. I'm sure there are several good options but I would like to narrow the list down to one so I can just buy the same stuff and never have to worry about mixing different fluids. Would like to hear from some veterans what they typically use/prefer.

I personally use what the manufacture specifies for in any equipment that has a TA, hydrastat, wet brakes , selecto-speed ,etc.......

the only time I use a universal is if the equipment is just equipped with a hydraulic lift and or steering .

remove all doubt and use the manufactures oil.

There is UTF and there is hyd oil. You do not want to put hydraulic oil in a tractor that uses the trans & diff as the hyd reservoir. Hyd oil is to be used for hyd operation only. Universal transmission fluid is for use in transmissions and differentials that use those cases as the hyd reservoir. If you find an oil that says it conforms to the Ford 134 specs, there should be no problem.

Be sure to buy oil that is rated for cold weather, I bought a 5 gallon pail of stuff rated for all weather cold/hot, At a Deere dealer. I have a hydrostatic drive transmission that needs the oil to be thin enough to flow at the cold temps.

On that SOS I would go and buy what Ford has for that transmission. Your saving a few dollars on the oil could cost you thousands in repairs. Also some of the parts in that SOS are not available any more.

Your call. I am have seen to many losers and few winners in this "cost "savings issue.

The universal fluids from TSC, the one they claim can be used on my Jubilee hyd, will work only when it's warm. I had to go back to CHN134 for winter use.

If you put 134 and UFT in a clear jar, you will see how clear 134 looks, cloudy UTF.

I would never put UTF in SOS and run the risk of being SOL, So On Lucky.

Read the jug/bucket. It will tell you if it meets the specifications. If it meets the specs, it should work just as well as the real thing.

You are in need of universal TRANSMISSION fluid, you are correct, observe the specs. You do not need the newer spec CNH fluid with the additional additive for the wet brakes.

If it comes in a yellow 5 gallon bucket then run from it as it is junk.....Unless it came from John Deere. Not promoting John Deere oil here, just sharing what I learned in the oil blending industry
