Chicago Stock Yards

Anyone ever haul in there? We always took our stock to Peoria and sold through the Dick Herm Firm. Those were the days we would stop for Ice Cream or Root Beer on way home. Durring the late 30's my Grandpa worked at Chicago Yards to pay his way through North Western. Not sure what he did but do know he made good money there. What a sight that was almost a square mile of livestock pens surrounded by packing plants in the middle of town.

Our FFA went to the Chicago stock yards in 1964 and 1965 but I don't remember what we went there for. Its been gone for about 40 years now. I hauled freight in Chicago in the late 70s early 80s and lot of it was gone at that time.

To get to Peoria Yards you have to go past housing project, always wondered as a kid how long would that pig last in the Housing Project if he jumps out of our truck

When I was in high school (class of 1963) and in the FFA we went most every year to the International Live Stock Show in the Amphitheater next to Union Stockyards in Chicago, Il. Might be the show you are thinking of. Armand

That brought it back now I remember. I remember while we were up there we went out into the stockyard and looked around and couldn't believe how large it was.

My dad was on the Purdue University livestock judging team that won the judging contest at the International in 1929.

I went there once in the mid '50s when my uncle took a load of cattle in from west of Geneva, Illinois. Big place, for sure.

Yep, been to the Stockyards, the International Ampitheater, the Museum of Science and Industry and Minsky's...Oh, and Navy Pier too...way back in the 1950's. Stayed at the YMCA and ran into the first gay guy I had ever met there...whew, creepy...
