Just curious...board format

Both...

Classic most because I like the format of seeing who replied to whom.

Modern for editing.

Modern most of the time, classic once in a while.
I use classic to see who replied to who, but it isn't always right.
Some times it says a reply was to someone who never posted
in that thread at all!
I like the way modern view moves the newest posts to the top
so I don't have to scroll through pages to find the newest reply.

Ditto

I use Classic most of the time and go to Modern view to see the profile of someone, if they aren't ashamed to let others know the general location of their whereabouts.

This right here.

I use modern, classic is a mess to me.

(quoted from post at 21:53:15 02/15/15) How many of you use "modern view" and how many "classic view" for viewing the board.

Today classic because my pc is acting wonky. But when I download pics , I use modern

Classic to post and view. Modern to edit posts.

Only time I use modern to post is when need to list several pictures and want to put titles/descriptions with each picture.

I do not care for the way modern lists the responses. I like seeing whom a poster is replying to. Classic does that.

Classic most of time. Easier to follow replies according to previous. one can use other posts to reference when a topic was posted if needing to go back to it(don't jump around with last posting on top). Can see visually who replied to whom(where the topic goes off topic as well)

I jump to modern to edit and search. once in while post in modern.

(quoted from post at 16:07:14 02/15/15) Classic.

I post often with info gained from years of working on Case stuff, Modern, hands down, new posts automatically take the thread back to the top and you can delete or correct misspelled words and add if something else pertinent comes to mind, that as a poster is invaluable to me, I would not trade the "Edit" function for anything.

After years of using modern I could not visualize using classic but don't care what anyone else does.

Classic, even in Windows on the PC. As near as I can tell, "modern" is ganging up to turn our whole world upside down.

There now, In my post just before this one I replied to Mike (WA) but in classic it shows that I replied to greenenvy.......I wonder who it will show this one is a reply to.

Edit.......Shows greenenvy again.......but I replied to my own post.

What kind of sense does that make?

Why wouldn't combining the best of both versions into one be a better option?

Now I'm replying to your first post. It should come up on the thread between your first and second posts. When you were replying to me, did you click on the "reply" button in my post, or in greenenvy's?

Yep, your post comes up where you said it should. When I replied to you I clicked "Reply" in your post. When I replied to myself, I clicked "Reply" in my post, they both came up in reply to greenenvy.

I'm posting in modern, I assume you're using classic?

Anyway, it doesn't matter, I can't see it ever changing here but I would think one good working version would be a whole lot easier for the administrators to run rather than juggling two that don't seem to mesh very well.

I use the Classic. I'm on another board that uses the Modern view format, and I HATE it.

The problem is where as the Classic view keeps everything in order, the Modern view shuffles the original post as others are added. In other words a week old post might be two pages ahead of a two day old post, it just depends on when the last post to it was made.

Granted it keeps the most 'active' threads at the top of the first page, but if you really watch how the posted topics go, they typically have a relatively short life, in most cases anyways. To me it's crazy to being a two week old post, that has already died, back to the front page because one person happens to find it and reply. It the information they have to include is so important, why not just start a new thread directed at the person who originally posted the question, etc.

That's just exactly opposite to the way I see it. Modern has the posts in chronological order first to last, top to bottom while classic is just all over the place.

Edit: And classic has this post replying to David G where in fact I replied to and quoted NCWayne. How messed up is that?

Modern View only here.

I prefer that threads be brought to the top if they are active rather than remain buried. Much easier to keep one "problem solving" thread going than to start a new thread referencing the old one. (this is more of a problem at Ag Talk where threads stay in order of origin no matter how many replies)

I am also in the practice of direct quoting the post I am responding to to prevent confusion that can arise because of the dual format used here.

I'll add to what hot wrench stated that the "replied to" post on Modern view rise to the top of the 1st page of that particular forum similar to "cream on whole milk" unlike on Classic view being buried a page & 1/2 or 3 maybe 4 pages down in the forum.

Started with classic way before they thought of modern that I do not like. I started evidently about 6 months after the site was started and way befor they brought out registering your handle, and when they brought out the modern they were planning on droping the classic and so many were against modern (I was one of them) that we convinced them to keep the better working easier to follow classic view. This is back when it was all the phone line service as well, no cable or satalite service yet.

"better working easier to follow" is only in the eyes of the beholder and which forum one is accustomed to.

To me it boils down to "nobody likes a a change in what they're accustomed to.

Can anyone point me to any other forum on the internet that uses the classic type format?

I've only ever seen one other one and it changed to a modern type format several years ago.

I am like Leroy. I have been here a long time, I pulled in here over 15 yrs ago . I don't have a problem with change but I only change for the better, classic is the only way to go. Looks like there are a lot more folks using classic than modern

Most of the forums I participate in that had a format similar to Classic scrapped it a long time ago because of the cluttered mess that it was/is.

Almost all forums now use a vbulletin or similar format with great success. That's why it's called "Modern View" .

Modern view only.

As mentioned. every other forum I belong to uses this format.

As far as the reply issues that hot wrench is referring to, I am convinced that the reason this occurs is because of trying to blend the two formats together. If there was only one, I suspect that a lot of those problems would go away. And as a result, the modern format would make more sense to those who currently don't like/understand it.
