Maple sirup

Had a Maple tree cut down yesterday. They told me it was a hard maple. I can't tell if it's hard, soft or what. Tree was in sad shape, it needed removed. While the tree trimmer was cutting off branches the maple sirup was pouring out. I wanted to get a pancake and get some.

Just to have something to do this winter, I told my tree guy I wanted him to do a cut and run. He cuts, runs and I clean up the mess.

Put a sign on tree, so far 2 people called and wants the fire wood. I'll clean up the mess and haul the sticks away.

My neighbor just cut down a silver maple that was huge. Expects to get about 20 face cords from it. If your's is really hard maple it will make great fire wood once it dries.

When I sold firewood I liked Maple the best. It is a good burning wood. Most of my customers were were repeats from year to year and never complained.
Here in the North-East we have a good choice of hard woods Maple,Oaks, Locust Hickory and several Fruit woods.

Looks like maple sap. Collect and boil approx 30 to 50 gallons of sap down to concentrate the sugar and produce maple syrup.
Speaking of maple . There is a Rye made in Collingwood Ontario that is aged in maple barrels instead of oak barrels. Very smooth.

it's a hard maple, looks a little far gone for the best firewood, but if it's cold out anything goes

hard maple is some of the hottest burning wood I have used, don't have much on my place, but I have a lot of soft maple, not much heat, use it in the shop, compares to box elder and crap wood.

I've got 80 acres of mature sugar maples (hard), red (soft) maples, a few swamp silver maples (soft), and a few Black maples (hard). No way can I tell for sure in the winter which is which unless it's early spring and buds are starting to swell. Bark is not always the same from tree to tree. Of course if you're cutting with a chain saw, you'll know right away if it's a hard Black or Sugar maple.

Tree in these photos is a large Sugar Maple that had a bee hive in it. I cut the bottom off with the active hive right in it and brought the wood and bee colony to a bee guy nearby.

It looks like a soft maple with that flaked bark . Generally , hard maple has tight dark bark and very tight growth rings compared to soft maple. That's why it burns slower and is ideal for veneer.

I won't be able to tell what the leafs look like in the spring either with the tree on the ground.

The oak tree next to it may be going soon. Looks like the stump has been hit too many times with mower and the roots are showing signs of rotting off.

Once I had tree blow into the garage. Stump was rotted off level with the ground. Same problem.
