Old motor oil

There has been a 55 gal almost empty Texaco oil drum marked 30 wt oil in the same place Dad put it back in the early 60's. I am cleaning the drum to get diesel fuel. The drum still had a few quarts of clean oil. The oil was a very green color, not clear looking like todays oil. Almost looks like 90 wt, but was motor oil. Probably not as good as todays oil. Wouldn't be surprised if it's non detergent. I will probably just use it as oil can oil. I just thought it was interesting to find some of the same oil Dad used when he farmed years ago. Stan

That takes me back. We had a 55 gal drum of oil that we used in the tractors. Pumped from the drum into an old glass gallon jug that had a chip out of the neck. I can't imagine Dad intentionally chipped that glass jug, but because of the chip you could easily pour directly from the jug to the tractor with no spillage. An intact jug would result in spillage for some reason. Maybe the chip admitted some air or something while the oil was flowing out. Yeah, that oil was a lot darker and kind of greenish.

I have a barrel that was in my dads sawmill when he sold it in 1977, and it had been there as long as I could remember. Was finally able to figure out from remains of paint on the barrel that it was hydraulic oil. Use it in some of my old stuff now.

37Chief,
What does it smell like? I remember oil back then had a different smell.

I have a few qt cans of oil sitting on a shelf, the cans have paper sides, metal top and bottom.

Looking back 50-60 years, I can remember oil in glass jars w/ spouts in the gas stations. It all had a greenish cast, especially Quaker state

'm still running oil that my Dad had bought several hundred gallon of shortly before he passed in 1968. Works just fine in old tractors & pick 'em up. I mean, what is a mere 50 years relative to when dinosaurs roamed? :)

Yes, the oil bottles sat outside next to the pump. I got the oil all over my hands while working at a filling station. We even had a 5 qt can with an adjustable spout.

I remember some stories about guys short sticking at the pump. They would pull the dip stick out of engine, then not insert it all the way. Show the costumer they were a qt low. Pocket the cash.

Texaco made an oil branded Havoline back in the '60's that had a greenish tint and a funky smell. Friend worked at a Texaco service station and his work clothes would smell like it. If the wind was right, you'd smell him before you saw him. :)
