AgriJeep Electrical problem.

Howdy all, I just bought a 1946 Willys Jeep that has some of the rear hitch parts on it. Runs great, but of course it has had a ton of low quality work done as far as gauges and electrical. When I got it, it wasn't charging, Replaced the regulator with one for a 70 Nova since it uses a 70 Nova Delco Remy alternator. Sounded logical to me. I also replaced the Amp gauge. now it charges great, but the engine will not shut off with the key like it did before. Someone has the alternator output wire going to the input side of the ignition resistor and the alternator keeps feeding the coil. Where should the alternator output wire go? To the ignition switch? If I disconnect the battery the engine dies.

Output wire of alternator goes to the battery positive post. Check out this site for pdf of alternator installation.

Here is another diagram for 10 or 12 SI Delco alt which you have one or the other I think.

I think you have feed back so you either need a idiot light, diode or 4 position ignition switch.

Yep, I am starting to think I need a warning light. And move the output wire to the Amp Gauge. I tried moving the output to the battery yesterday and the gauge quit reading. With the ignition switch that is on it now, if I shut the switch off, the gauge stops reading but the engine still runs. Not sure how it worked before, but maybe it didn't work right and they just left it as it was and charged the battery when it got low. They just goofed off with it down along the river and woods near here.

A warning light between # 1 excite treminl and ignition switch should do it. Bulb need to be big enough to excite alt but not too big as it will feed back I think. # 194 is about correct size if I remember right.
A diode in place of bulb will work too. You need to put diode facing the correct direction tho.

Well after a lot of head scratching, almost cussing, and trying to figure out what someone else did years ago, I think we got it! Key now shuts off engine, It charges good, no backfeed when shut off, but does show discharge if low speed and lights on. Charges again if you up the rpm a little. No idiot light used, only one terminal on the back of the alternator used for the field to F terminal on regulator. #4 terminal not used on regulator. This is using an external regulator with an amp gauge. Never did find a wiring diagram for that! Went ahead and replaced the temp gauge since we were under the dash anyway. Ol Jeep coming along nicely so far!

Oooopps, it did not register that you had an external voltage regulator. Glad you got it working.
