I am trying to convert a1945 farmall A from a manual start to an electric start. I am looking for a belt driven starter/generator. Does anybody know of one or a manufacture that has made one that would work?

I think he is talking about a starter generator combination like they used on small Wisconsins

Cub Cadets had those. Probably several other brands of garden tractors as well. Don't know if any of those would be powerful enough to crank a C113 though.

Many of the cub low boys used a starter generator. I just got in a job that has a Koler engine on it and it has a starter generator on it that works with a belt drive. That engine is going to be replaced due to a knock in the engine

I saw something about International Harvester Cub Lo-Boy 154 using that type starter/generator. Somewhere to start, Ebay?

Check the Delco sites for starter-generators. A unit for a single cylinder Kohler or Briggs 16hp has been used on model T engines a few times- the 4 cylinder starting drag isn't much more than the single cylinder drag. Dodge did this when they started out. Leece-Neville heavy duty utility unit used on a few Wisconsins, old Continentals and was supposed to be a kit for IHC F14, F20 use. Bosch unit made and used on some 60 to 150hp aircraft engines- direct couple or belt drive adaption. Home made belt or chain drive using Chrysler reduction gear starter from Hemi with a splined out put shaft and a pulley or chain sprocket, dual use starter/generator regulator was Delco for Simplicity adapted to it- F20 adaption. Starter plain bearings replaced with ball bearing from generator, some other generator parts so half starter, half generator. The rig is used on some earlier homemade electric car projects for a regenerative drive unit. Last rig I've heard a reference to is a golf cart regenerative electric motor used on a old stationary engine that put out 30 some volts when used as in generator mode, charged a 24 volt system that had some wiring to get 12 volts for some use, 24 volt for other use. The Chrysler reduction gear nose on a generator unit was supposed to be relatively easy to make by rebuilders shops- stock parts used mix and match but the parts are for pre 1990 vehicle and applications- Might be a bit expensive now. Numerous listed on e-bay. The higher the charging current the more robust the starter/generator is.

I'm betting it does. You would be shocked at how easy it is to
hand crank start an A. Those little engines wouldn't have much
more resistance than the old engines on the cadets. We had a
riding mower growing up that had a Briggs 7 horse on it. Back
when a 7 horse was the size of today's 22 horse. It had a S/G
that would still crank it with the deck engaged, etc. Your
biggest obstacle is going to be belt slippage.

I looked up the engine size on the Cub, it's a 60
CI, 7.5:1 compression. I'm assuming that would be
a little stronger starter than the garden tractor
versions, but better do more research before
committing to buy.

But then it might work, might not...

The starter-generators I've seen have a small pulley like 2" or so and the engine has a big pulley, maybe 8" I'm guessing. That's a 4 to 1 reduction. You would need at least that much reduction, maybe more. Anything can be fabbed up but by the time you got that starter-generator geared down enough to turn over the engine over you will have more time and money in it than you would in converting it to a regular starter setup.

Your A must not be a 45 model or it will have the place in the bell housing for the starter. Best bet is change to a newer bell housing ring on the flywheel then use factory setup for the rest of the charging system. You could try a starter-generator where the gen mounts on the left side of the engine but keeping belt tight will be a problem as the fan assy isnt built for the tension. But you can replace the fan assy with a new one that has bearings it would work for a time but the pulley on eht fan will sooner or later give out due to th way they are built. Best is get the parts and go original it will last forever.

(quoted from post at 18:19:37 02/04/15) make sure you get one that turns in the right direction. Power King turns one direction Cub Cadet turns the other direction

I am aware of that...I have emailed almost everyone with one listed on ebay and nobody can tell me which way theirs turn
