Angie's list

What do you guys think of Angie's List? I have a friend that needed help with his wood stair railing that was loose and falling apart. He hired a "carpenter" through them and a kid showed up. Didn't have a clue what to do...didn't bring any fasteners with him. Friend had to supply those and did most of the work. After an hour he paid him ($70) and sent him home. Angies charged him another $100 for lining up the service. Rip-Off!!

Eldon,

I hae not used it once, so I can't comment too much.

My thinking is that if you pay a service fee for another service, well that's too many middle men for me.

It sounds to me like it's just a place for people to slam businesses for any petty little thing they can find to complain about.
Some folks thought my brother in law should put him plumbing business on there, but he didn't want any part of it.

It seems like today, everybody has their hand out for money for doing little or nothing. Personally, I do not believe in paying a service for information that can be obtained for free elsewhere. You could likely get similar information by asking friends or family about their own experiences with carpenters or even by going to the Better Business Bureau. You can find all kinds of listings in the yellow pages, and then go to the BBB to check them out.

I've used Angies list twice...both times successfuly
Angies List DOES NOT charge for using their recommended firms. Some of their recommended firms are better than others of course..but my experience has been positive

I think it's a good resource, but we have one
account my entire family shares. So the cost
is split so many ways it doesn't really cost us
anything.

I'm sure that violates their usage policy, but,
what can I say.

If I were to have to subscribe alone, I
wouldn't bother.

Instead what I'd rely on more is actually
facebook. I a lot of towns around here, people
set up "town" pages - not really the town
itself, just a group of residents.

I find those groups (at least the two I'm a
member of) are fantastic ways to share this
kind of information.

Really depends on where you live and how many
members are in a group like that - but for me,
it negates any need for angies list.

Not ranting, only expressing opinion based on first hand knowledge. If 10% of the tax money spent on agencies meant to protect and aid consumers produced results that wouldn't be happening.
Angie's List rates businesses based on consumer opinions. Look how opinions contrast right here on YT then tell me how you know which are accurate.

Think I looked at the site twice.

Don't see the point to it.

I live by a community of 15,000 or so, about 35 miles from a
community of 40,000 pr so, about 100 mils from a community
of over a million.

The two times is was looking I got no hits from local, didnt
really see much from the bigger community, and I'll be darned
if I waste my time looking for a furnace repair or car repair
place 100 miles away.

Just seemed utterly totally without any point at all?

It appears to be a gathering of people's opinions, which
somehow Angie gets to make money off of and steers people
to places she gets a kickback from?

I can get better advice from you folk for free right here.....

Or just make my own phone calls and pick my own businesses
to do business with.

Does it actually do anything for anyone?

Gosh, I didn't know they charged a $100 fee for the referral. I think using them is a complete gamble. I know of a guy who was trying to be a builder. I knew his wife and knew his story so I know what his real story was. On Angie's list, he looked to be a master, carpenter/builder. In reality, he was a very shady character with little or no qualifications. Knowing you have to pay Angie a big fee on top of a total risk, then I'd have to pass.

I worry that sites like that are more about "black balling" people than making referrals. I get most of my business anymore by referral from customers. It is sad we really don't have a phone book any longer and most of the shoppers and other advertising media have gone to the dogs.

If it was me, my review of that contractor would not be good and you can explain why in comments. Live in SD and wife has house in Albuquerque NM and without being there and not knowing a lot of contractors, I have gone through them to get quotes on work, but have yet to select a contractor for any jobs.

It was publicised in a couple magazines that the serice reps write their own recommnedations, which makes the list almost worthless.

A good friend told 5 years me ago that Angie's list called him to say that they had a good report from one of his customers. They then said that no one would find it unless he paid for a featured listing. I will continue my boycott.

If you were completely incompetent to judge the
quality of a worker and his services it would be a
step or two better than throwing a dart at a phone
book.
Beyond that I found them to be worthless and a
money pit.

As a contractor I think the way you get the best contractor is
from a referral from friends neighbor family. Also where you
have actually seen there work. Google the company name the
owners name check BBB. The county recorders website and
serch there name if there's been a judgement for not paying a
sub supplier tax criminal record you will find it there most likely.

Yes the contractor pays to be on website i have had people
make me a rock star but you can't get that info if your
searching for me unless I pay Angie's list I won't I don't even
have web site. The contractors on there are paying to be
there not always the best one.

We still have the phone books. Do you have a land line phone? If not that is why you do not have a phone book.

BBB is a sham, too. Businesses can pay to up their rating.
My business is not on any of them. I have an ad in the
phone book, but most of my customers come by word of
mouth.
