OT, How Can It Be?!?!

This morning I decided that I felt like having some cereal for breakfast, rather than my usual egg/toast/oj breakfast.

Upon reaching the cupboard, I had a decision to make, Life, Rice Crispies, or Grape Nuts (yuck!).

I chose Rice Crispies.

While opening the box, I noticed that the serving size was 1 CUP, and that there were approximately 9 servings per box.

Then I looked at the front, and it said that EACH SERVING is PART of a "nutritious" breakfast.

So, 3 mouth full's later, my "serving" of Rise Crispies was gone... I came to the conclusion, that if EACH serving was PART of a nutritious breakfast, then eating the entire box would fill my tummy with approximately 9 parts of a nutritious breakfast!

So, how can it be, that an hour after eating my entire box of Rice Crispies for breakfast, I am already hungry again??

Question of the day:

How many parts of a nutritious breakfast are there?

Bryce

You have to remember, Bryce, that todays nutritional standards are for the average person to doesn't do much physical labor in a day, and most certainly not for growing, active teenagers. Wait about 40 years. The shoe will be on the other foot.

Rice crispies is all carbohydrates, eggs, bacon, meat, milk is protein. Protein holds you over carbs do not.

Hi Bryce
Just eat sensibly and eat what you need to function for the day. Half these medical guys, that decide what we should eat is only an opinion, and that changes as the flag blows round the pole in the wind. and you also know the other saying about opinions L.O.L.

In 5'11 and well built. According to a nurse i know, She figures if they look me up on a height weight chart I'm 1000 years old and a giant red wood tree!.
I farm here and push 4-6 Hard core 5x5 bales round most days, and if it's not frozen scrape concrete in 6 barns to doing chores. Then go in the shop lift heads/ flywheels, and clutches back in tractor jobs to most days.
It seems to be If I was the Ideal size and weight I'd not be able to do half this stuff. As I need the body mass to be able to do a lot of this work. And it would probably make me look ill, being that light.
I don't eat any fried breakfasts, or much other fried food very often though over a month.
If we followed the rules on this and that being bad, for us we'd probably starve to death L.O.L.
Regards Robert

yup oatmeal is heart healthy. been eating it every morning for better than two years after i had the grabber. getting tired of oatmeal :-(

Unless you were going to cook something, you should have gone with the Grape-Nuts. The nutrition in Rice Krispies is kind of like the old joke about your chances of winning the lottery being statistically the same, whether or not you buy a ticket.

As others have said, you need some protein, not puffed-up carbs. Leave the Krispies on the supermarket shelf.

Bryce, living in Idaho you HAVE to eat potatoes for all three squares. Thats the inpression i got when i was there on the harvest.

I too have oatmeal 5 days a week for 30 years.
I doctor mine with some /all of the following.
Flaxeed, flaxseed meal, bulger, steel cut oats, chia. quinoa ,wheat berries, and walnuts.
The above gets soaked for 24 hours . So this morning I choose some /all of the above for tomorrows breakfast.
Tomorrow I add the organic old fashioned rolled oats and nuke it .
Toppings are one of the following. Raw sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup ,cinnamon and milk.

I would prefer to eat like a "Hobbit", but it would kill me.
•7:00am – Breakfast
•9:00am – Second Breakfast
•11:00am – Elevenses
•1:00pm – Luncheon
•4:00pm – Afternoon Tea
•6:00pm – Dinner
•8:00pm – Supper

The nutrition information is on the cereal package. You should be able to compare it to to the estimated daily requirements of a person your age. A common school project is to add up the nutrition value of what you eat in a normal day.

Oatmeal with a spoon of peanut butter, half cup of blue berries, sprinkle of cinnamon and top with a slice of thick smoked bacon or other slice of pork, small orange and coffee. Oatmeal is like rice- a base for other secondary ingredients, flavors to be added at times. RN

Try stirring in some of that fruit flavored yoghurt in your oatmeal.

A few years ago, my Dr. asked what I ate for breakfast. "2 eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and toast." I said. She reprimanded me for eating hashbrowns. At that time I was still working, so I switched to instant oatmeal and toast. The next visit she told me that I would be better off with eggs and bacon than oatmeal. (great news, I hate oatmeal). Now in retirement I eat 2 eggs, six mini sausage links, 2 slices of wheat toast, and a glass of OJ. Keeps me going till lunch.

Had a friend of mine tell me years ago that for breakfast he would have 1/2 loaf of bread as toast, at least a 1/4lb of butter, 1/2lb of bacon, one dozen eggs, half a plate of American fries made up in the bacon grease, a pot of coffee and, a 1/2 doz cinnamon rolls every day. Yes, he is still alive but he has to be around 500lbs

According to some doctors, my grandpa ate all the wrong foods for 92 years! He was a farmer and they raised most of what was eaten.

After we graduated a kid from my class came to work for us. After morning milking we'd knock down a gallon of orange juice, dozen eggs, loaf of bread, cook the eggs in the grease from the pound of bacon. Sandwich for lunch and our fill of whatever grandma made for supper.
I actually lost nearly 80 pounds that summer.

Rice contains almost no protein. Pure carbohydrates (starch). Your body burns up carbs in about two hours. If you want a breakfast that will get you through to lunch, you need to consume some protein.

A cup of Rice Krispies (it's spelled with a K!) has about 26 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of protein.

3/4 of a cup of Life contains 25 grams of carbohydrates and 3 grams of protein.

1/2 cup of Grape Nuts contains 47 grams of carbohydrates and 6 grams of protein.

Of the choices you had, you picked the least nutritious one. Next time go with the Grape Nuts. Your mom will appreciate the fact it's also about the cheapest brand name cereal she can buy.

I eat two donuts for breakfast . One at 8:30 and the other at 10:30. One cup of coffee on the drive in . Same waistline since 18 years of age. I used to eat a much better breakfast when I lived with my parents .

You just need to put more butter and sugar in it :)

How many parts of a nutritious breakfast are there?
Lessee, there's the imitation part, such as rice crispies or other puffed up junk in a box; then there are the real parts, such as eggs, toast or oatmeal or pancakes, OJ or coffee, bacon or sausage, and a bag of cookies (oatmeal or PB) to hold ya over until lunch.

Fake food and serving sizes fit for a malnourished mouse are for those who don't do much. Anyone who actually works, and especially who works a good part of the day outside this time of year, NEEDS substantial calories, and a good portion of those in good (HDL) fats, like from mostly grass fed meats.

Of course, some depends on your metabolism too.

Back when I was married to a chimney (cig smoker), occasionally I'd come down with bronchitis. Went to our doc, who as a routine question asked what I had for breakfast. Being sick and a bit off my feed, I told him "an 8 egg omlette with cheese and ham, 4 slices of toast with butter and jam, a large glass of OJ, and a 10" chocolate chip cookie for desert". He asked if that was normal fare, and I told him sometimes I'd have 8 or so 6" whole grain pancakes with butter and real maple syrup and a few scrambled eggs, or a big (12oz) bowl of oatmeal with butter, raisins, honey and whole milk. He recommended I get my cholesterol checked. I did, and it came back as a 99. He was flummoxed. Haven't had bronchitis since the chimney left for someone else who smoked, nor had my cholesterol checked again.

I have gained some weight since high school (about 40 years ago) - all of 6 pounds, and I was thin even then. If I had to live on "recommended serving sizes", I'd fly off in a stiff breeze.

Rule #1: eat healthy - what you eat has as much effect on health and weight as how much you eat.
Rule #2: get outside and get plenty of exercise.

Gotta go hike up the hill (~500' through 2' of fresh drifted snow) with chicken feed, then another trip with water. If I'm not back in 20 minutes, send a St. Bernard.

Ok. So explain to me how the orientals make their main meal out of a bowl of rice and a bit of protein? Course I will admit that a lot of them (that I saw) were thin and of slight build.

Course I totally agree on dry cereal doesn't stay with you, but a couple of packs of instant oatmeal will.

I just make sure I've got the four major food groups;
1-sugar
2-salt
3-preservatives
4-CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!!
