glacier/yellowstone

seriously planning a trip thru glacier this summer any body done it and about how long does it take to cross on the going to the sun road.we are going to be in yellowstone for sure and plan to head up thru glacier then home.

The last time we went through Glacier, we left Kalispell early and spent the day in Glacier. Left on the east side and turned north towards the border. Got into Lethbridge late in the evening.

exit North Yellowstone and get on the BearTooth Highway to Red Lodge, Montana. Prettiest drive I have ever been on.

I stayed in Shelby over night, then went through the next day, had to see much when you drive. Did take a lot of the pullouts so I could look, most places are a long ways down.

I live about 90 miles from Yellowstone, you'll go about 1 mile from my place if you take Beartooth Hwy north to 1-90 from Yellowstone.
Pretty drive to be sure, but not you're fastest route to Glacier Park.
Also be prepared that it is a 6-7 hour drive from Yellowstone to Glacier, more like 9 or 10 if you go by way of Beartooth Hwy.

Its not about how long it takes, but how slowly you can do it. Low speed limits mean great mileage, but be prepared to stop often. If you are in a hurry go around the parks.

Put Cody Wy on your must see list. Winchester, Buffalo Bill Famous Hotel downtown. East of YP 20 miles. (Irma?)

I saw Yellowstone first in 1978 and also the Black Hills in SD. I absolutely love the Black Hills but I have never been back to Yellowstone.

I live about 3 hours Southeast of Glacier so I think what I have to say will be valid. I would plan on a minimum of 4 hours to drive the "Going to the Sun." It can be done in less, but you will not have time for any detailed sightseeing.

Been through Glacier and the GTTS road several times. Allow several hours as there is a lot to stop and see. We also took the Red Bus tour, lots of fun there too, although we hit a cold snap and it got pretty cold up on the mountain. Watch the weather reports, we did and brought jackets and sweat shirts.

I took my family to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons in 1999 and back in 2001. We stayed in one of the modern cabins at Yellowstone lake. I love the area. Cody Rodeo in Cody, Wy is really good as well as The Museum but it takes several hours. I've not been to Glacier but hope to soon. I don't know where you are coming from but a trip through the Black Hills is really nice.

If I were driving the Going to the Sun Road, Id spend an entire day, its one of the most beautiful drives I've ever taken. Having been in my RV to many Natl Parks, I tell people if you can only get to one in your life, MAKE IT GLACIER.

DO NOT MISS the great lodges, Lake McDonald on the West side and Many Glacier on the west side DO NOT MISS THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT MISS The Bear Tooth Highway on the way down to Yellowstone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're in Yellowstone anyway, drop down to The Grand Tetons just south

The National Parks, Americas Greatest Idea, See the Ken Burns Documentary

If you're going in a motorhome, there is a limit on length allowed on the road due to sharp turns.

Personally, I would go to Glacier before Yellowstone. But then, I would go to the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and the Redwoods before Glacier. Give yourself a full day on going to the sun road.

To me Glacier was a big disappointment. Yellowstone was great. We went on the "package deal" in Cody. The tour was interesting, the music/meal was great but the rodeo was a waste of time. Just a few local wannabes..... very mediocre performers. Not one bucking animal was rode.... not even close and there was a lot of killed time just to make it last too long. If you're into the "west" then the museum is a must see. Opinions are like armpits...... we've all got some!
