OT--Computer system restore.

I have used system restore many times, but now it's different.
Before, I would have a calendar to choose a date from.
Now I am given two dates, for a few days ago.
Is there a way to restore further back then a few days?

In the system restore dialog box there should be a check box for "Show more restore points". Try that if you see it.

Some viruses will *hide* the system restore shortcut (a menu item is simply a shortcut) or alter the default shortcut to add parameters that disable some features to try to make it hard to recover. You should be able to go to the Run box and type rstrui (the name of the system restore executable) and it should bring up the full-featured restore dialog.

Win 7 has the show more restore points box in the bottom left corner.

Just make sure you are doing a Restore Point...

and NOT a System Restore - because I think that
will wipe your computer clean.

I'm curious about that. Some time back I had a similar issue where out of the blue System Restore got turned off and I couldn't turn it back on...Domain Administrator turned it off and I didn't have permission level to turn it off. I'm not on a domain, so tried to create one and make myself the administrator, but didn't work. Also, I used to use Internet Explorer and always cleaned my cookies and history before shutting down my computer so as not to broadcast anything out to the net so I don't get inundated with spam offering me...? But, all of a sudden I couldn't do that anymore. I had picked up a virus that so screwed stuff up that I couldn't work with, repair it. I reloaded my system, bought a new antivirus software.

The reason I want to restore is that a few months ago, I had a problem with computer. It was actually a bad cable but I didn't find it until I had messed with a lot of things.
I regularly run virus scans and have protection and the computer is fast as ever with no problems.
Now--before this problem, I could right click and drag to highlight words and it would appear in a search box at the very top left of screen. Also, there would be a dropdown list of all that I had searched.
This was very helpful and I used it every day.
Now when I am on a page, I have to go to the top left in a grey bar and type or paste a search word and there is no drop down history.
I would like to have it the way it was but can't restore over 3 weeks ago.
I am sure it has to be a simple setting???
