OT Knee replacement

Well I'm getting a new one the first week of APR if everything goes right! Just wondering if there will be a grease fitting????

Now I'm gonna have to get my 2 close by son's and a son in law to help me make sure everything is ready for spring field work. Really hate it but they are at least going to have to do some of the tillage and early planting. The ole ball and chain is planning on tying me down I think. Had a local guy get a knee about 6 months ago and did too much so it didn't heal right. She's scared to death I'll do the same thing. Wonder where she gets that idea?

I always wondered about one of those needles with a zerk on it for greasing sealed bearings. There've been days I was tempted to find out.

had mine 6 yrs ago. never a problem. Take your pain meds especially before going to PT. Their job is to keep all those "mad" muscles stretched out and working to full range. Without the meds, they are gonna hurt ya. With meds (and plenty of your own stretching at home)recovery will be quicker and easier. If you don't get those muscles stretched you will be "peg-legging" all your life. Ya get one chance and if you let those muscles shorten , they will stay that way. Have had zero ill affects from mine and no pain. Fully sealed and lubed by body fluid indefinately.

My Dad had one redone a couple months ago. Wore out the
plastic between the metal parts. Last something like 17 years
though.
Do the PT - it won't work right if you don't. Good luck!

evilboweivel: They tried that. I had a reaction. The size of both my knees was impressive!

Randy: I know. My MIL had one done. 1st she was scared of becoming addicted to the pain meds and didn't take them. 2nd every time she looked like she was in pain my FIL wouldn't let her do the home PT she was supposed to. She finally did heal up and do OK but it was a long a slow process. On the 2nd one my wife went to the surgeon with her and had the doc explain about the pain meds and what the dangers are. Then after it was done my wife drove her mom into PT every day so my FIL couldn't interfere. About 2 1/2 months later she was back up doing all the things she had to stop doing after her knees went bad.

I got some horse liniment last summer that worked wonders for me. It took the swelling out and took out about 90% of the pain anyway.

highly suggest you start exercising right now to prep that knee for replacement

had both knees replaced on Jan 13
synvest shots bought me years of time and started exercising a couple of years ago. started doing squats last June as the pain when trying to sleep was too high to keep working.
finally made it past the 1st of the year and have 12 weeks of vacation, sick days, personal time etc
Doc said I would be out minimum of 12 weeks.
I started therapy yesterday and am doing way more than PT and OT thought I would be able to do. Got a ways to go however if I keep on improving then they will recommend me going home 3 days early. then I will need to keep pushing trying to get strong and agile enough to work again.
I do maint work and was carrying a 5 gallon bucket of boiler chemicals down 20ft flight of stairs every other day since winter started. was still climbing 6' ladder changing ballasts, changing out 3" cast iron steam valves, get up on a roof if I absolutely had to but needed lots of help. Will need to able to do that type of work when I go back hopefully in 10 to 11 weeks after surgery.
I like to eat and have a comfortable house to go home to.

GOOD LUCK
Ron

Hope all goes really well for you, old tanker. Will be putting in a good word for you every time I talk to the man upstairs.

The more activity the better it will work. It starts with three sets of ten stand up in the wheelchair 30 times. Then it goes from there . Just tell them to put your kneecap in the front .My doc forgot to do that and had to go back in both knees .They call it a revision so they can charge your insurance . Best knee guy in the country .Right.
{ Styker kneees are out Zimmer knees are best]

The guy doing it did my MIL's knees. He's pretty highly regarded. So I hope he gets it right!

a great friend had one replaced. He claimed the operation was a cake walk but the therapy was
brutal. However it ended up being a miracle. the
other knee and his hips stopped hurting. he had to
relearn walking without a limp. No more pain.
I hope yours goes as well

Had mine done about seven years ago at Mayo Clinic and
could have walked out of the hospital on my own if I needed
to. One was done about six months before the other.Their are two things that they are very careful about and
that is infection and blood clots. Both bad news but I can walk
all day long today with no pain. They hurt so bad before that
the physical therapy was a piece of cake. Good luck and we
will be thinking of you. Let us know how you do. Tom

My FIL just had one done right after Christmas.
He's in his late 70's so the recovery isn't as
quick as it would be for a younger person but he
seems to be getting along well. Not having cattle
to feed this winter is driving him nuts - this is
the first winter he hasn't had them since he
started farming on his own 50+ years ago. But, he
knew that he wouldn't be able to handle that
during his recovery so he's making do.

No knees, but had a shoulder done in Nov.
doing fine now, no pain, got most of my motion back. Still working on it. But I'm not burning wood this winter, have to listen to what he says. It's worth following instructions to have a successful outcome!

I wish I could find somebody to do my hips. I can't get my knees apart & ride the wheeler side-saddle. Hips were x-rayed last April & showed bone on bone. Been to 7 different docs since with no help. After seeing my records, Mayo won't even make an appointment.

Roger I actually did joke about a hypodermic grease needle to my knee doctor. I got NO reaction from him. He did poke a needle about that size in my knee to draw out fluid. It took a very long minute to get it done.

Hope it goes OK for you. Everyone I've talked to (except one) wishes they would have done it sooner. Marilyn had a hip done a year and a half ago and she has zero pain, though they say a hip is easier than a knee.

I'm getting a new knee the 27th Jan, Wife is getting a new hip Feb 3rd. different hospitals 300 miles apart. then as soon as possible get the other one done for each of us. We are both planning on going to a rehab center for 2 weeks. I am doing it for my self protection, If I come home immediately and there is a problem here on the farm, I will be out and in the middle of it.

Absoutely agree, there needs to be a grease fitting, a locking screw, an adjustment ring you can loosen or tighten it up, toe-in / toe-out adjustment screws, and the nurse needs to hand you a complete bag full of replacement parts, Teflon lube, packing, seals, etc. on your way out the door.

My wife's oldest sister had hip replacements when in her 90's. She's 97 now. Her late husband was
a CWO in the Army. Hal

Oldtanker. my Mother (86) had both knees replaced last year, about 3 months apart + a shoulder replacement 4 months before that..

The therapy to regain range of motion IS the real deal and is painful but she said from the time she woke up from each surgery how much less joint pain she had..

About 3 weeks before you should be outside walking with a cane for a knee. One lady square dances & round dances with us had a knee replaced and round danced at the end of 2 weeks.

KEEP the Ice bag on and leg elevated( mix 1/2 Cup rubbing alcohol with water( Double zip-locked bags) and then will only Freeze to a slush..

Get a LONG Shoe-Horn, to help get your shoes on..!!

BEST of Luck to you...!

Ron.

Had one done 2 1/2 years ago. Couldn't be happier with it. Everyone heals at a different rate. A lot depends on how sturdy the leg bones are to start with. For me, the knee replacement was a walk in the park. Some people, not so much.

Do the therapy without fail. Don't have to go to the point you are ready to pass out from pain, but you do have to push a bit further each day.

I was back to cutting firewood on an every other day basis in 6 weeks. You may or may not be able to do that. Use your head and when the knee tells you it's had enough, listen. You'll heal up a lot faster and be happier with the end result.

Be prepared to have the hip on that side bother a bit. You will be walking with a normal gait for the first time in a long time and it may take the hip joint a bit of time to adapt.

My knee was so bad it toed out several degrees from my good knee. The Doc told me it took a bit of time to get the new knee lined up with my other knee.

The brand of knee I have boasts up to 30 years before replacing the wear plate. Doc told me if you are active to figure on somewhere between 15-20 years. 17 years from surgery would put me at 80 years old. I'll be right happy with that kind of mileage.

In 1991 I was installing a ceramic floor. The
floor kept squeaking. I discovered it wasn't the
floor, but my knees were making the sound, bone
on bone.

While at the Dr, I read an article about
Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate which I've
been taking every day. Some say it does no good
for relieving pain, which may be true. I only
had knee pain when I was kneeling. Today, I can
kneel on concrete, no pain, no grinding bone on
bone.

My over weight 4 year older brother had his knee
replaced when he was my age. Again some studies
say it doesn't work. I living proof it does. I
will take it till the day I die.

Below is a little clip I found.

About 27 million Americans suffer from
osteoarthritis, an often painful condition in
which the cushioning cartilage between bones
wears away. Many people are trying new therapies
and dietary supplements such as glucosamine and
chondroitin sulfate in their search for relief.

Glucosamine is found naturally in the body. It
stimulates the formation and repair of articular
cartilage. Over-the-counter supplements come from
animal sources. Chondroitin sulfate is another
natural substance found in the body. It prevents
other body enzymes from degrading the building
blocks of joint cartilage. The type sold in
health-food stores and pharmacies is derived from
animal products.
