Cast welding

I forgot how to identify Cast iron, Cast steel etc etc. by the spark from grinding. have a part that I want to weld. Guessing it is cast steel. Orange sparkly spark. Thinking about brazing it. Tks for any info.

I identify cast steel from cast iron by hitting it with a sharp drill. Cast iron will give nothing but dust, cast steel will give at least short curlys. I weld cast steel with 7018, but I don't see why you can't braze it if brazing is strong enough.

cast steel welds as easilly as mild steel.

cast iron can be welded with good technique and some preheat and long cool, peening.. etc.

if the part you are welding is a bracket or small enough you can preheat the area with a rosebud, and then weld it and toss it on your gass grill, and then peen on it a bit and then let it slow cool.. it won't matter whether iron or steel.
