bucket truck fixing ot

i bought a bucket truck, now its actually old school ladder truck with a bucket on the end of the ladder, the thing raised and lowers with a hydraulic cylinder, and hydraulic motors drive chains which give the ladder its extension and rotation, the problem is i have rotation to the right, both down at the truck and up in the bucket but no left at all, i can over ride it by pushing a plunger on the bottom of a solenoid under the unit, so it does work, but i cant find any wires off or broken, the same motor is used to rotate the unit is there any way to wire around the trucks existing setup so i can have left hand rotation in the bucket? the unit is on a 1971 ford f-350 and has been married since new, from the old paint colors i found im thinking it was originally part of a fleet order for the phone company , okland utility body and ladder

The first thing I would do is check the solenoid, if the plunger operates by jumping from a battery, then you have a wiring problem. Only way to find it is to follow the wire from the solenoid back to the switches checking at each connection..

i have an '81 e350 with a bucket on it.if i remember there was something odd on the soleniods. if i remember they worked backward. power off was a normally closed switch as opposed to a normally open.

Ok, when you go to the right, do you hear or see any relay's or solenoids changing, then when you try to go left, are you hearing or seeing any of the same things happening? If not, you either have a relay or solenoid that is bad. If you do, hear or see the same responses. From the comment that you can over ride it by pushing the plunger on the solenoid, makes me believe either that solenoid is not getting powered by the relay for the left direction, or the solenoid is bad. I have a 40' JLG Boom lift, troubleshooting controls is always fun...

It has been a while since I worked on anything like that, but there are somethings to take into consideration in addition to a bad relay or broken wire or bad operating switch. Some of the wiring is a little strange on some, such as One relay only getting current when the opposing relay is in the off position, etc.
