Transmission oil...

I have an Oliver super 77... I have always run 80-90 I'm the trans. But as you know that stuff is not cheap... Is it ok to run John deer 303 which is a universal hydraulic, transmission oil? Will that hurt anything?

Thanks

This same question has come to me. Since we are talking about
the same things, made the same way, doing the same job, just
why is heavy oil so important if thin oil can contain the additives
to survive the pressure tests and all that ensures oil remains
between steel parts under high pressures.

I know my '63 Ford 2000 uses it in the transmission rather than
GL-1 gear oil. How do I know that? The transmission keeps
filling up and the middle hydraulic sump keeps emptying.

The pipes from the hydraulic pump on the engine go through the
bottom of the tranny case (thanks to Soundguy enlightening me),
and I apparently have a hole in the high pressure one which he
said is a common problem. This has been going on for the 10 or
so years I have had the tractor and was that way when I bought
it, no telling how long before that it started.

So from a BTDT mentality, I'd put in some JD 303 which is
designed for trannys, hydraulics, and differentials (and wet
brakes) and be done with it. Additionally, in the winter shifting
is nice and smooth.

For around the place it might be ok, had a friend try this in his Super M Farmall. He takes this on tractor rides, couldn't stand the gear whine from the thin oil and replaced it with gear oil.

Considering the age of the M looks like the thick oil was masking some age related problems. Doesn't mean the thin oil was failing as a lubricant.
