Oil seam a little high

A couple days ago someone mentioned buying a 55 gal drum for around 400.00. I thought I would see if a 55 gal drum will be less money. I called my Shell dealer they wanted 921.00 for a drum of 15-40 Rotella. I guess its back to the discount stores one gal at a time. Stan

(quoted from post at 14:04:44 01/15/15) A couple days ago someone mentioned buying a 55 gal drum for around 400.00. I thought I would see if a 55 gal drum will be less money. I've found that out also. Checked one place where you can re-fill your 5 gallon pails....still higher than the Farm and Fleet stores where I can usually get Rotella for less than 60 bucks...that would be $660 a barrel....plus you get 11 free buckets!

I find at my local Mobil bulk dealer that the cheapest way to buy oil is in 2.5 gallon jugs.
For the dealer, the cheapest packaging and the cheapest price for oil is the 2.5 jugs, 5 gallon pail is more expensive and steel drum is the most expensive, even when you put down a deposit you can get back when you return the drum, which you would think would be the cheapest, but not so ??

I buy small containers like 5 quart or 10 quart. I bought a barrel a few times but I fear contamination from dirty measuring cans or leaking into the bung holes from rain

Sam's club has 55 gal. Rotella-T 15w-40 for $615. Other oils and anti-freeze I get from a local independent distributor as they have the best price on what Sam's doesn't have.

That was what I paid a few years ago, it's called Cam2 brand, I'd have to call the oil guy and see what a drum costs today.

We usually buy a 100 cases of the 2.5 gal jugs about twice a year. Our supplier said hold off as long as we could. It has just now began to move down and will drop after all this high priced oil is out of the stream.

I have usually found that I could buy oil cheaper by the quart at Fleet Farm that I could by the barrel from my wholesaler. The hassle of dealing with all the empty plastic containers made the higher price in bulk worth it for me.

We also discussed that engine oil prices are going to lag behind gas prices because they're still working through the stock that was made from $100 crude. There is also a bit of a "because they can" factor in the prices.

When I was in my second childhood and bought and ran a rock bucket for a couple of years....just like I did as a kid playing in the sand..... I thought the same thing but bought the drum. I was running 11 gallons of oil every couple of months in regular oil changes for my 800 cu. in. Cummins Big Cam. It now makes one of the 3 drums I keep in an old chev p/u bed trailer containing my diesel and being in the trailer, easy to go to town to fill up; easy to use, easy to fill, and don't have to carry it around with me all the time like if it were in the bed of my p/u especially since I am down to 1 road vehicle now.

Back to the story..... I agree that what you said is the way to go.
