Fordred8n

New User
I am replacing the rear axle seals on a earlier model ford 8n the oil is leaking into the brakes and I have no brakes. How many shims do I need when I put it back together or how much gap should I have? That's what the shims look like.

If you will post this question down on the N
tractor forum you will get the answer your looking
for. I always count the number of shims that I
remove and put the same amount back. But with both
back wheels of the ground after everything is
tight and you roll one wheel forward and the other
turns the same direction you have it too tight and
you need to add more shims. The guys on the N
forum will have an good way to set it up

Do have a manual for that tractor?
You need one. All of that stuff is explained there.

Also, <a href="http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/nboard/wwwboard1.html"target="_blank">Click Here</a> to go over to the N forum. You're on the wrong board here. I didn't own one them to give you much help.

The shims are probably to preload the bearings. You need to
find out how much preload it is supposed to be and do it right or
you may end up with leaking seals again or mess up you
bearings and races.
Once you find out what the preload is supposed to be you put in
more shims then what you started out with. Set up a dial
indicator with the axle all the way in. Then in some fashion pry
the axle out and read the measurement. If you read .005 and
you need .003 preload you need to take out .008 worth of shims.
At least this is how my allis chalmers was. I'm pretty sure all
tractors have to have axle bearings preloaded.
