Rear axle shims

I am replacing the rear axle seals on a earlier model ford 8n the oil is leaking into the brakes and I have no brakes. How many shims do I need when I put it back together or how much gap should I have? That's what the shims look like.

The shims are what determines the bearing preload. There is no specific number, you add or take shims away to preload the bearings. You want the bearings to have a very slight preload, no endplay.

A shop manual can explain it better than I can, it would be a valuable investment!
