Can anyone Identify this peice

This is a glass jar with a off-set cone shape top crimped to the glass.about 3.5 inches tall and 1.5 inches in dia.this piece belongs to a friend of mine and hes in his 70s and he said it belonged to his mother

With that little cut-out on the open portion, I suspect its an early yellowjacket trap, missing probably a piece of screen that went over the gap in the cone.
 
It makes me think of something like a covered candle sconce... like one could use it walk out to the outhouse in the dark - "back in the day" before modern flashlights.

The coned top would not let a breeze blow out the candle while you walked... but the opening at the back side would allow the flame to get oxygen.

No clue really - just a guess.
