Here in La Jolla Ca. This is very high rent district, along the Calif. coast. Part of San Diego now. Back in 1931 the city built a wall into the ocean and created what is called the children's pool. this area was enjoyed for many years until the seals moved in a few years ago. The tree hugger group fought the city enough to let the seals stay there. If anyone disturbed the seals there was a hefty fine. Now there are so many seals crapping all over the rocks. Along with seals comes the birds doing the same thing. The stink is so bad Hotels are losing customers, stores also losing money. Food service industries also losing money. Now the city is hiring a animal expert to try to convince the seals to leave. I think a person with a rifle could do the same thing in a few hours. This could only happen in California. Stan

But I am sure that none of the tree huggers live near by or own any of the affected businesses.

same thing happened near here, there is an old mill pond now used as a lake for the well to do folks several years back a few geese took up residence that was just peachie until there got to be several hundred using their lake front yards for a home, all of a sudden it was legal to hunt them even though it was a neighborhood inside the town limits

Who actually owns the land? If its private ownership then they should be able to move the seals out if its public owned then its majority rules on what happens there as the hotels have no right to use public property for their own commercial benefit.

Several years ago we took the kids here when we were on vacation. I remember two things about it. The first was how bad it smelled! Reminded me of cleaning out the chicken houses when I was a kid. The second was I decided to hold my nose and take a picture of one of the seals. Even though I was on a public beach I guess they have all the rights. A local started screaming at me that I was disturbing the seals and how I didn't respect nature, etc etc. been back to California a couple of times since but not there again!!

What I have found to be a pretty common thing is that most tree huggers do not have much in the way of assets. They want everyone else to be as broke as they are.

You get a few that have invented something that muddy the water some but most of they are just lazy busy bodies.

37chief: It amazes me the crap that people put up with in the abundant run, nature nuts areas. Plus the real trouble is that the vast majority of nature nuts have absolutely ZERO common sense. Add in the fact few of them actually have any true knowledge about nature. They are easy to sell some crazy idea as they have zero knowledge that is truly factual bases. Look at the idiot that got killed by a bear while he was "living" with them.

I wonder why so many people want to live in places like California or New York. I guess that never think about the freedoms they are losing living in these communist states. I would put Illinois in the same basket. The stupid monetary policy is going to crash sometime and the whole state will be hurting. California is getting in the same shape money wise with Moon beam as Governor.

I will stick to my cold Mid-west states that have pretty good monetary polices and fairly common sense governments.

The way I've always understood land ownership around water, the ocean in particular, is this. From the mean high tide mark out is not owned, nor can be owned, by any private individual. In fact it's considered Federal regulated, public land as it is actually the beginning of the 12 mile territorial limit recognized as extending into the ocean around every country. Right or wrong, I don't know, but it's what I was told years ago by a friend of mine who had the credentials that he would have known.

I don't study such things, but the last I knew, the only ones coming to NY were those looking for the most generous welfare benefits. I assume most of us are here because we were born here. I seriously thought about leaving once, but didn't want to gamble on trying to support young children. All three of ours are now long gone!
NY is really quite farmer friendly. It's the wet weather that drives me nuts.
The weather in California would make it attractive, but there are certainly other more all around friendly places to go.

I agree , at 72 I know I am old fashion but for the life of me I can not get over these tree huger, animal rights bunch. Had they been around when our fore fathers started going west guess this county would have never been settled. Cutting no logs or whipping that horst to get up the hill. Sad to say but their ways have cost us all. The regulations California put on gas lawn mower engines are a perfect example. In open areas emissions of small engines are no problem but out there in there little valley might be some concern never less the whole nation has to pay.

California is a beautiful and diverse state with amazing resources,,and because of their dominate "Tree hugger" mentality it is one of the poorest states in the union.

And we are about to be poorer, when they build a bullet train no one will ride except, the farm workers going back to Mexico to spend their money. Stan

Yup, agree 100%. Just looked at water heaters on Home Depot's website. There's a bunch of words about counties in California where water heaters must meet Ultra Low NOx. I was just picturing the amount of emissions from a water heater  and how these eco-Nazis out there are making more work and costing more money to people who don't live there in order to make them "feel good" about the environment. Same thing with the "egg" edicts.

As far as I'm concerned, California could slide into the ocean and I'd yawn.

As for the seals, yup, sounds like California crazies.

Here in Michigan, we have to put up with the DEQ and wetland nazis. If I see a cat-tail sprouting somewhere on my land, the brush mower comes out quickly.

Yup, NY ain't called the "welfare state" for nothing. When Florida started the drug testing for welfare pukes. Thousands of them flocked to NY. For about a year and a half after Florida went to the drug testing, about every other customer was a welfare/druggie/ ner do well at the pharmacy and grocery section was newly moved to NY from Fla. Lotta crook/druggie types moved to NY after Fla. emacted their "castle law" also.

I wonder what they'd do if they saw our DNR guys shooting mute swans(European, not a native species) to get them off the lakes. They are very territorially aggressive and attack fishermen frequently, plus destroying habitat for our native swans. Just another pest as far as I can see, but some don't agree.
