Oliver super 77 transmission noise

Just bought a good running Oliver super 77 at a sale... I have only a John Deere, A, G, also a case VAC but anyway I am changing all the fluids and I think that I really like the Oliver's... I have a question though. The transmission shifts smooth and seems to go into all the gears and all but to me it seems like there's too much noise. Compared to my deer or case which you don't hardly hear the gears... is that just how the 77s are, I have changed the oil with 4.5 gallons of 80-90. And the oil that came out wasn't that bad. No metal shavings or anything...Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Oliver's of that era whine a little. When I was a kid I would listen to my neighbor's whining 70. The engine was so quiet compared to our two bangers but I could hear the whine. You will most likely find the 77 handier than your Deeres. I grew up on Two bangers, am very comfortable with them and still have three of the two bangers I grew up on. However if I need to do a job that requires a 40-50 horsepower tractor, the Oliver 88 is the first tractor I grab.

ok thanks... That had me a little worried. Do you guys think that 850$ was too much to pay for the ol girl then?

I am planning to pull it... I have pulled a John deer G for a while and would to try something different... Does anyone know how I could get more power out of the Oliver without adding a turbo?

We paid $1000 for a good running 77 (not a super) from a dealer a couple months back. I say you done good. My I can't hear the engine run over the gear whine on mine.

Yep Oliver whine - normal. $850 sounds like a steal for a super 77 to me.

Late 880's or 1600's and all the higher number 4 digit above 1600 and later will not have that whine as Oliver went to helical gears on those instead of spur gears.

1555, 1550, early 880's and all numbers lower than 880 will have the spur gear whine. I personally do not find the whine sound pleasant. Do not care for the whine on a modern hydro tractor or skid steer either for that matter.
