Versatile 256 hydrostat

Anyone had any issues with the hydrostat on the Versatile 256 Bi-directional? Blowing snow today and every quit, like a shear pin broke. Unfortunately it wasn't that easy. Tractor wont move, PTO wont turn, tried to pull it back to shop and all 4 tires locked up. I guess I'm pulling the hydrostat off tomorrow unless anyone has a better idea...?
 

sounds like something basic in the hydraulic system, like a bad internal leak. Hopefully it is not the pump.
 

no troubles with hydraulics, that's separate. hydraulic pump mounted on rear of engine, hydrostat runs wheels and pto. Engine runs fine
 
The newer ones 276? Had the sloped nose? Anyway we had a couple at work that the splines in the drive hub on the flywheel wore out and stopped everything like mentioned. chris
 
Hmm, well I never thought about that. We put a new engine in it last year, I can't remember what that looked like. Any way i'll have to pull hydrostat off. Damn, I was hoping there's a pin type dowel inside the hydrostat that fails, or even something easier. When your spline failed were you able to pul the tractor, was it free wheeled?
 
Check the owner's manual on that tractor. There should be a towing valve on the hydrostat that you can open so that it will free wheel.
