Battery hot wire shorted

I have doing some repairs on my chipper. I had the batter hot wire removed to change a connector. When I replaced the wire it fell on the exhaust pipe. The motor stopped. I thought the battery terminal came loose. I pushed the terminal down with my hand. It was so hot it burned my hand. As I am typing I am holding a piece of ice on my hand. I hate burns, they last for a long time. Do you think I damaged my battery by a direct short? It seams to work, but what about long term. Stan

It's probably still good if it's still working but it may shorten its life some. Only time will tell. You're lucky the battery didn't blow up in your face. You should always disconnect the ground wire first. This will prevent this from happening. If your ground wire had been disconnected the hot wire wouldn't have shorted out when it touched the manifold.
Always re-connect the ground cable last then.

think you missed something, he already had it running when the short happened. I assume the exhaust melted the insulation on the wire. Tough to get it running with the ground off.

It's probably not a great idea to mess with the battery connections on a RUNNING chipper... Don't you think?

Disconnecting the battery on most things while they're running can cause damage to the charging system. Not always but why risk it?

The motor stopped because of the direct short of the positive wire against the exhaust pipe, causing the post clamp to become very hot. I had to disconnect the battery. Stan
