im considering getting another truck and looking for some input.its a 1996 ford f-150,4.9l inline 6 cyl engine,automatic-overdrive,2 wheel drive,68,000 miles, has air conditioning, crank windows, manual locks, fixed steering wheel, just a plain truck.the previous owner was our school district, always stored inside, the body is very good except for light rust around 1 wheelwell on the bed,and some rust under the drivers door.repair panels are included.has 2 new front tires, and a new battery.i don't think I would use it much more than a few hundred miles a month,i simply don't go many places,i live by myself and would only have a max of 1 passenger rarely too.the asking price is 1500.the engine area and underneath are dry and very clean, comes with all maintence records also...opinions???

those generation fords are prone to rust, hard to find one without it for that price i would even venture to say impossible and you wont kill the 4.9, i have one a reg cab 2wd and can get 22 mpg all highway and 17 ish mixed with 16 all town. these motors can go 300k plus, have seen one personally do 465,876 before the main shaft in trans went out and driveline flop from it took out the rear end

96 was the last yearford made a pickup the 300 i6 was fords best motor these drove great rode great easy to get in and out of. andgot good millage around 17 .look at oil pan for rust and check rear spring hangers and gas tank personally if its nice i would be all over it. if its a xlt thats a plus better seat. and parts dont cost arms and legs and15 inch tires are lots cheeper than 16s

Sounds like a pretty good deal. After a years use, the truck won't owe you a nickel! I'm a GM fan.

as stated check the rear spring shackles most are rusted off the frame. Most of the parts houses keep them in stock. take a sniff of the auto tranny fluid, we put a lot of rebuilds in those units.

I have a 1993 f-150 with the 300 and have 280,000 on it now.I would like to run it to 300,000 but the body is getting rusty. Mine is 5 speed and 4 wheel drive but other than an electrical issue afew years ago and a new radiator and several exhaust systems it has been a great truck. I do not no what to replace it with as it gets good mileage and is heavy enough for our 16ft goose neck trailer.Long distance I do not like to haul anything bigger than a Deere 3020 but close home I will haul 4020's.

First off don't think about it buy it! That said that is one of the best body styles ford built, And $1500 for a 19 year old truck that's low miles and been took care of are really hard to find. 96 was the first year of the new computer system for the code readers, No going back to ford to have to pay to hook up to there computer to clear codes and fix the problem. Now you can do it yourself. I don't think you can go wrong on this truck. Bandit

My first truck was a 96 F-150, and it was a darn good truck. I
don't think you can pass on this deal. You don't get much of
anything for $1500 anymore.

My son bought a new one, an Eddie Bauer 5.0 5 speed manual. The thing rode horrible but he got a lot more for it than I thought he would when he finally sold it. The 4WD quit working around 35K. It was a pretty truck.

I have an old 94 F-150 with 297,000 never had the valve covers off, 5.0 automatic,, it is rusty now but still very dependable. I have a 95 F-150 5.0 short bed that I am restoring now for a shop truck,, they are good little trucks, and I always thought they had a very good ride...

Buy it..........you can't beat it for a all purpose farm truck. I have had 4 trucks with the straight six and IMHO the most dependable engine ever put in a pickup. they are not the best on mileage but an extremely durable engine. As others have mentioned, watch for corrosion on rear spring hangars, oil pan and cab mounts. I bought the one I currently have in South Carolina 2 years ago in order to avoid the rust issue. All of mine have had the 5 speed manual, though, so I cannot vouch for the automatic.

I have a 98, and it's a good truck. about
220,000 miles on it so far. Biggest issue has
been mentioned already, and that is the rust.
The bed rusted to the point, it was unsound,
and ended up replacing it with one from a junk
yard. Also, the gas tank straps rusted out and
needed to be replaced. learned later there was
a recall on that. I ended up replacing all the
brake lines for pin holes caused by rust, and
finally had to replace and reweld the hitch, as
it also rusted completly off.

I had a '94 F150 300/6 auto that I put 280K on it before my son totaled it. The motor was still strong. I had the transmission rebuilt at 242K. I consistently got over 20mpg on the highway and quite often got 23mpg. The only thing I ever did was keep the oil changed with the cheapest I could find and tuned it up every 75K. It wasn't the best at pulling a trailer but I could put 2000# on it and it handled it good. It was a far cry better than the Chevys and Dodge that I have now.

I don't believe I have ever seen so many comments, all in agreement! The only thing I can say is that if I had a chance at it I would buy it in a heartbeat. I have owned more six cylinder Fords than eights, and they are tough engines. IIRC, this one has the AODE transmission, which is electronically shifted. They were good trannys also.

Should be a good one, I put 130 K on my '96 150, 300-Six, 5 spd, manual hubs etc., truck really gave no problems for the most part and I liked the 5 spd, though that trans was nothing special given what it is, easy motor to work on, we had the same one in a '66 F100 service truck, very reliable.

sounds like a good deal to me too.
Here in NY, it would be gone quick.
The demand and price for good pre-97 vehicles here
is climbing fast. (They don't have to be plugged in at inspection time)

I've got a 1995 F150 with 4WD, E40D auto trans
and the 300 cube six. I love it. It too was an
"old man's" truck. It was my father-in-law's.
When he retired from Ford Motors in 1995 he
bought it to use as a plow and chore truck when
he retired to a rural area in northern
Michigan. He lived on a private road over a
mile long and did all the snow plowing with it.
I have it now. Almost no rust and runs like
new. I know there was a line of local people
who wanted it when I wound up getting it.

So I now have two same-color red Ford trucks. A
1994 F250 446 cube 4WD diesel, and this 1995
F150 4WD 300 cube gasser. This 1995 gasser
gets the same fuel mileage with gas that is a
dollar per gallon cheaper then diesel. What's
not to like? Actually, my 1994 diesel gets 17
MPG on a highway trip. The 1995 with the 300
gas engine gets 18.5 MPG.
