OT: Finishing the 2014 Garden

Been shelling these by the heater in my shop in the evenings. They are Colossus Purple Hull peas developed by a Clemson Hort professor in the mid 50's. He is still alive and in his mid 90's.
Have done about 11 pounds so far and have a couple more pounds to go. I planted these in July where I had just dug potatoes and picked them after they had dried on the vines in early November. Good protein and good eating when cooked with some fatback in the crock pot.

Thanks, think I'll have to check the seed catalogues that already came and see if they have them. Never tried drying and shelling peas. Amazing how many varities there are.

I want to try growing these and other dry beans/peas on a slightly larger scale 1-2 acres and harvest with my Allis All Crop. No one sells dry beans at the farmers markets around here. Figure if I timed all the maturity dates with frost I could combine everything on the same day or weekend with combine clean-out between varieties.

When I was young we saved our dry peas for the next years seed. We tied them up in a corn (burlap) sack and beat the sack real good with a stick the size of a broom handle. Then on a windy day we would pour them slowly from one big tub to another until all the broken pea hulls were all blown out. Then in the freezer till planting time.
