Finishing up a shop project

Just finishing up this hand cranked cotton gin for the SC state ag museum in Pendleton SC. Now kids (and adults) can see how a gin uses saws to remove lint from the seeds and faster turning brushes to remove the lint from the saws.
The heart pine came from an old cotton warehouse here in Oconee County SC.
Been a fun project.

Neat.

I grew cotton one year here in Minnesota.

Mom was a teacher, and had some demo stuff left from teaching in the war years era. One was a boll of cotton.

I found 3 seeds in it and planted them in the 80s in the house.

One plant was stunted and small, the other 2 grew well.

Got 3 bolls off of it.

Was kinda fun, a crop we do not see around here.

That is a neat looking gin! I've seen one similar to that at a museum at Texas Tech in Lubbock. Those saws remind me of that old saying: How do you recognize a old ginner? By how many fingers he has missing....

Yep. I used to work with a fellow from Texas whose dad worked in a gin when he was younger. He lost an arm in the gin. Farmed for the rest of his life with one arm.

Richard looks like you did a great job on a neat little project. For those of us who don't know how big is a cotton seed? Maybe equal to an apple seed? Thanks for sharing!

Richard it looks great. I have been planning to build one myself. I have the components, just haven't took the time. I was gona build from memory and a few scribbled notes I have of one I had seen a few years back. You wouldn't by chance have any plans on the one you built I suppose?
