Ground a load of feed today with the IH 856. It worked fine, shut the PTO off and got ready to unload the feed and turned the PTO back on and the PTO would not come back on. Linkage seemed to work normal external of PTO housing. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the idea, I don't know too much about this tractor, I just got it this summer. I will check tomorrow.

Don't know if they are the same as an 806 or not, but my neighbor has one and this summer when baling with a round baler the same type of thing happened. Turned out it was a tiny little pin inside what he referred to as the "stem" for the pto. Replaced that little pin and was back in business.

Like M nut said the little pin could have come out of the end of the spool valve. Follow your PTO lever linkage down to the PTO unit and see if it pulls the valve up. If it does not, there's your problem. It could be the splines in the engine clutch but if that happens and it acts like what I saw on a 656 you will hear a grinding noise. Let us know what you find.

further clarification on that pin-- the control valve spool is two pieces- the bottom half is inside, not visible. if you look on the bottom of the pto housing directly below the control valve, there is a hex headed plug. if you remove that and the bottom half of the valve stem falls out, that's your problem (hyd oil will leak but not too fast, just put the plug back right away and you'll only have to catch a couple cups).

to repair- parts of the hitch have to be removed for clearance, but unscrew the nut from the top of the valve stem and the whole works comes out the bottom. replace the pin and put it back.

a common cause of the pin breaking is if the over-center linkage is worn, then when you push the lever to "off" it allows the spool to drop all the way and shear the pin. if you can gently move the lever over center but "catch" the valve partway, then ease it to the "home" position, that will help to not break the pin.

If the spline in the clutch goes the whole thing will have no steering or hydraulics to the rear as well as the brakes. It all runs on the one shaft. If everything works except the PTO then it is probably as alreay said the pin in the valve stem.

Here is parts diagram. The small pin others have suggested may be broken is #27. Remove all parts on top of PTO unit, remove plug #15 found on underside of PTO unit and remove all parts referenced in #21. If pin #27 is broken, shaft # 26 may come out the top, but when you install the new pin, shaft #26 will be connected to #25 as a unit to all those parts seen below it and it must be installed from the underside.
I once used a needle bearing from U-joint cross and bearing set for the pin . It was same diameter but needed to shorten it a little with a grinder. Worked perfectly and saved a trip to dealer for the part. Still working many years latter.
