Any cat truck engine mechanics on here? I need to pull the compressor off and put a new gasket on it where it mounts to the engine . Is the gear a taper fit to the shaft and will I need a puller to break the taper fit?

taper fit, it will need to be pulled off. mine wasn't to tight 20 years ago, just a 3 leg will work well the pump is off on bench to pull.

So I don't need to pull the gear just to replace the gasket just pull the pump replace gasket and re install ?

I've also read I need to drain the antifreeze is this right and is there a better way to do it?
Thanks a million for the help feeling a lot better about this job now

Yes, you have to drain the coolant also. Make sure you replace the small coolant hose while the compressor is off, it's a lot easier. Just be ready when you pull the compressor out, it's heavy!

Ditto on draining the coolant and replacing coolant hoses while its out. If its equiped with a power steering pump that drives off the splines on the compressor gear you might have to remove to to make life easier putting the compressor back on. We wouldn't want you talking to yourself over it.

Are you sure it the compressor gasket leaking and not the accessory drive cover? It is a bit more involved to fix that one. You have to pull the front cover to get to some of the bolts and nuts that hold it on. In most trucks (prob all) the hood and rad need to be pulled to gain enough room to work.

Thanks for the info somebody has replaced the one coolant line to the compressor already I guess there's a return line for the coolant it can't just go in and not come out right? Sorry for the dumb questions I have just looked under the hood haven't even started turning a wrench don't know what I've got myself into yet . As far as what's leaking I'm just a gasket replacer at this point so that's what I'm doin .

You are correct, coolant can't go in and not come out. On the front and back of the head should be fittings for coolant hoses. One comes in from the side of the block to the back of the head. The one that comes out the front shoud go over to the top of the head.
