Another day on the farm

Except I had my helper with me today. I take him along if I'm not doing too much tractor work, but since we were going to unload 2 wagons of bedding today I planted him on the seat when doing that.

He played in the snow while I changed the well overdue oil in the 1855, helped grandma make brownies with one of his cousins, then "helped"set up the blower and pipe then unload. Got done right before dark, and he went back in the house with grandma while Dad and I tore down again and parked the wagons, blower, and tractors.

I'm really happy to see the ear protection. I preach safety at home all the time, and having to deal with my own hearing loss, I try to make sure everyone else lives a better life than I do.

What kind of bedding is that? I've never seen anyone blowing bedding before.

It's canary grass out of a low land marsh we normally chop in August. We chopped this on the 1st. Snow matted it down some but we still got a decent amount from it. Wagons were sure packed tight from bouncing around on the frozen ground.

It was clear ground then. Last night we got another 2-3 inches.

I always wear ear plugs myself and he doesn't come with me if there are no earmuffs. Especially when the 18 is involved...

Don, my neighbor also chops late cut hay for bedding under his dairy cows. I like it better than sawdust or shavings. He also chops up old round bales but that is usually late winter. Good to see the Olivers working, I have to fire mine up today before the cold comes back! Greg

Think you already have that little helper hooked on farming. He is just eating that up.

Oh yea. He's 4 and his little brother is 2. He's getting to where he can help me do a few more things, and he's also gonna have to learn to share with his little brother in helping me. Then in a few more years their newborn sister is gonna be helping too.

I know I was driving tractor while baling hay by the time I was 7 or 8. I think I was 5 or 6 when I was raking hay. Whether or not he's doing it at that age remains to be seen. Might just depend on the looming rain and not having another helper to work with...

That just scares the hell out of me to see that
little guy on the tractor with that pto running and
half the shield is missing. FIX IT. If you don't
have the money let me know and I will send you the
money. The Flying Belgian.

We blew chopped barley straw into the barn for many years...had two holes in the overhang of gothic rafters....they acted as a "chute". Had several holes over the center alley where we set the 4x8 straw cart...filled that and forked it into the stalls. No twine to buy, no bales to handle, takes less bedding when chopped, works well in a manure pump.

It'll get fixed before we chop first crop. It wore through just behind the bell on the wagon end, then slid inside the tractor end. We might even have 1/2 a shield in the shop. Never throw things away until they're completely junk... might just need to come up with a few of the clips for the older shields.

Parents have an auger in the barn so long hay and straw in the gutter is a huge no no. Plugs it right up.
