Bigggg eggs....

Well I was getting a double yolk huge egg once a week from one hen, among some normal sized ones. She was our all star layer. I wondered how long she could do it. Well, her inside parts fell out the other day and killed her. Isn't that odd, getting double yolk giant eggs that often? Never had another like that.

Years ago when dad had cattle we had a half Holstein/Herford mix. In the 12 years we had her she had 4 sets of twins. Having the Holstein in her she gave plenty of milk for both of them

I had a Barred Cochen hen once that laid eggs that were faceted, with triangle and trapizoidal shapes in the shell that made it look like a bizzaro egg. She finally died the same way, her insides exploded out her vent.

I heard a double yolk meant the hen was about at the end of her career. The hens we have now put out a few doubles when they were starting to lay but I haven't seen one for a year at least. We have 15 hens and twice last summer we got 16 eggs in one day. No I did not miss one from the previous day. After the first time I made darned sure I checked all the nests and then it happened again. Second time it happened they had been laying 100 percent for a few days prior to the day they laid 16. The next day I gathered 14.

We raised Belted Hampshire pigs. One evening I was watching one giving birth. After 12 piglets she cleaned out and about an hour later I went up to bed. Next morning I went back to check on her and there were 22 in that pen. Had to clean the after- birth out again. She raised 21 of them.

I live near the poultry producing area of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. A cousin of mine produces hatching eggs for chicks to be grown for eating. Tomorrow he is getting close to 20K pullets in his houses. They are about 17 weeks old, and will start laying full blast about 1st week of March. He will get lots of doubles from them, some will blow out. The doubles cannot be set to hatch so he shares them with friends and neighbors. The government will no longer allow the extra eggs to go for processing and by lay must be destroyed. I guess we all are law breakers as we enjoy the big brown eggs
