430 corn head- changing snapping roll

What is the easiest way to get the snapping roll off? On the AC 430 head I have one of the rolls snapped due to the cotter key coming out and the nut backing off allowing the sprocket to slide. It looks to be a pain of a job to do to replace it, but has to be done..

Sounds like an orange head.....right? I"ve changed them in the snow, laying underneath the head, and it"s no fun. Simpler to take the head off, use a loader to tip it up on its back side so the snouts are in the air. Makes gravity work WITH you, instead of against. I reach the loader over the head from the rear, and tip it back. Wrap the chain around two front frame members.

Easy to get at all the bolts- may have to take both rolls out as a unit by removing the bolts in the common casting. Those rolls are very specific to location in the head...some, but not all, are the same. Remember that when finding a replacement.

If you"re talking a black A430...I"d take the drives off, then unit clamps off and repair on the bench.

Well there is no real easy to change one, But it you take the head off and lift it up and stand it up on its back it makes it a lot easer. This is how I did mine when I replaced on of the rolls. Block it good and back something up to it for a safety. Bandit

I"ve tipped mine more than once. Good idea about blocking/anchoring...although I"ve done mine inside on a concrete floor and free-standing is ok then. Replaced all 32? row bearings in a total teardown...took several days to reassemble!
