Horse Powered Log Splitter

I think I've seen that horse making ice cream.

I had the good fortune to see one of those in action at Horse Progress Days a few years ago. It was being used by some Amish from Liberty,Ky. to demonstrate their treadmills. I liked the fact it was faster than any hyd. unit I have seen. It would have been nice to see one used on hickory or black gum. They were using it on pine.

(quoted from post at 23:10:09 12/29/14) I wonder what happens to the horse if the splitter hits a serious knot and stops the whole she-bang!!

I think you underestimate the power in play there. And, IIRC from the magazine article I read on this, when that does happen the pump switches to the 2nd stage just like on a gas engined pump and works that way. If it's really too much the over pressure circuit cuts in and the ram stops. I forget the exact numbers but that 1 horse power on the treadmill works out to 6 or 8hp at the shaft.

Looks like some very straight grain easy splitting wood to me ? I think It'd of been less work with a maul ?

(quoted from post at 00:54:38 12/30/14) Wonder why they always incline the treadmill? Seems that would wear out the horse faster, making him walk up hill.

You have to have the incline or the horse just walks off the end of the machine. Think about it, without the incline you'd need someway to harness the horse to a solid object behind him to hold him on the treadmill. The incline gives the horse (dog, goat, cow, man) something to "push against" and transfer his weight into energy. Gravity helps him work. Of course there are limits to how much incline can be effectively used.

Physics, and the need for help from gravity.

See Brets post. Also if the operator wanted the machine to operate faster he would steepen the incline.Mills were made for dogs , goats, mules. There were also turnstyle types where the animal had to step over the power shaft each time it came to it while making his round.Oxen were often used on this type.
