OT-drop in fuel price

Last night when I came home, diesel was $3.09 at the local Shell Station.

This morning, it was $2.99. Woohoo! Since they offer a .04 discount for cash, I whipped in and put some diesel in the truck.

Don't remember the last time I was able to buy diesel at less than $3.00/gal.

Merry Christmas!!

well nancy, i'd holler at james and tell him to fill all the fuel barrels at the farm. 3000 gallons should hold ya for a while!!

Filled up with diesel in Memphis last weekend for $2.98. Gas here in Sioux Falls, SD is $2.17.

Merry Christmas Nancy, put me in the group that prefers lower gas prices even if "some" out there prefer them to be higher, that's their right and they can feel free to donate to the gas station owner or oil company if they want to pay more lol

Glad some one is getting lower priced dsl, here in Wyoming, where we are producing a LOT of Oil, road fuel is still 3.69-3.89 depending on which station,, they tell us we Can afford it here that is why they have not lowered the price

Don't get too excited yet, here are my prices this morning. Note the difference between the pump price and my discounted price. That means the price is still dropping. When they get within about $.30 the price has leveled, closer than $.10 and price is rising.

Here ya go Tom, my discout at flying j says I get fuel at $.03 over cost so that tells you what their profit is now. Lol

I just pd $2.89,2.82 and went by a truck stop advertising 2.70 about 20 miles down the road from where I just filled for 2.82. Went from feeling excited to feeling jipped in less than 1/2 hour. This is for diesel in TX and OK this last week.

I expect that Flying Js cost is like many other industries. The manufacturer or distributor of pretty much any product can invoice at any fairy tale price, then credit monthly or quarterly discounts. I know that it would be no problem for my company if a customer of ours needed to sell a customer at cost plus.

Jon,
I see your computer screen looks a lot like mine at work....

YTMAG open, Craigslist open, welding tab... then I get my work tabs open too.

Why did it take several weeks longer for the price of diesel fuel to drop compared to gasoline this cycle? Usually gasoline and diesel prices move in proportion to one another.

You are in the DFW area right? I heard this morn that Fuel City down on the old Industrial Blvd down on the river is selling regular for $1.99 gal. A loss leader for sure, regular is about $2.38 everywhere else locally. They have absolutely great tacos and sell thousands of them to workers etc. But wholesale market price did drop again this morning on world markets so we could see that price all over before long....but we all know not for long.

If you buy 20 gallons and pay 10 cents more per gallon it's only a $2 difference in a $50-60 purchase. It is nice to have small savings but in the long run I don't think they matter a great deal.

've never seen that happen in my area.gas drops while diesel stays the same or drops very little in comparison, seems to have been like that at least the last 4-5 yrs.

My theory is that out of a barrel of crude you get some
gasoline, some diesel, and some tar.

Gasoline is the driving demand.

Since we are driving less, and using more efficient gasoline
cars, we are using less gas. Which means less barrels of
crude are being used.

So, less diesel and less tar is being made.

But, the demand for diesel and tar hasn't gone down, so the
prices on those is steady to up. Kinda creating a shortage
almost.

Or, other countries are paying good money for diesel since it is
a more energy dense material, and with the weaker dollar
we've had the past number of years, our refineries are
shipping the diesel overseas, rather than selling it locally for
less money.

Now, I'm just full of theories.

Wonder why, actually, too?

zacary; put 200 gallons in a truck @ 5 miles per gallon and tell me that 10 cents a gallon is not important in the cost per mile to operate. it can make a difference in the drivers wages if he is running 60 miles in an hour

I have to disagree. A normal fill up on my truck runs 20 - 25 gals a week. A .10 difference means $2.00 - $2.50 per week. That comes to $104 - $130 a year.

I can't speak for anyone else, but to me that's significant.

Your exactly right Zachary. I don't shop too hard to fill my pickup. Usually buy 25-30 gallons when and where I need it.

But!!!

My Peterbilt typically takes 150-200 gallons at a time. When I'm running hard that can be every other day. I've pumped upwards of 600 gallons a week. Fuel prices do vary, $2.70 at a mom and pop truck stop to 3.49 at the major chains, this was between Houston TX and Fort Smith AR this last week. That's about a .80 cents per gallon difference. It pays to shop.

Gas is too cheap, we need to protest to pay more for it.
You want economic growth to go negative?

You people ought to live in oil country like we do. Gas prices finally came down to $3.69 yesterday.

I agree AND if everyone would buy from the lowest price it will continue to put pressure on the other place to lower their price. I CAN afford to buy at whatever price but trust me I shop for the very reason buying from the low price station put pressure on the other ones.

I thought I responded to this this morning. Must have been too much truth in what I said as it apparently got spoofed.

the price of Crude oil as of last night was $56.00 a barrel and that is 42 gallons works out to $ 1.33 a gallon and and taxes no more than $0.50 a gallon there is still a good profit margin for big oil. Also gasoline is the lowest price part of crude oil. Just a thought

Oops. Wrong thread. I responded to a post TX. Jim made this AM about Dallas gas being at $1.99.

Anyway buy it cheap while you can. As soon as the big boys wreck the little guys getting in on prices that support their ability to compete, the little guy will be gone and the price will be right back where it was or usually higher.

Happens time and time again. What's new.

Mark

So you want to talk about how the Pilot/Flying J kickback never went back to the companies like Dart but rather bought a football team.

If you think Jimmy Haslam (owner of Pilot/Flying J) is selling fuel for $.03 over cost you need real help.

So did Dart get involved with the big lawsuit against Pilot?
