OT Apple Trees

What kind of apple trees have you planted to make good apple cider? I want to buy a few fruit trees and don't really know what apple variety to buy. I plan on canning apples also. Thanks, John

Don't know what state you are in, but maybe doesn't matter.Grows in four zones.
In MN. two popular ones are Honeycrisp and Fireside

When I was a kid, Dad used to use what was on hand at home..Northern Spy, Red Spy, and Red Delicious. Later on in life, I had orchards and used McIntosh, and Empire. I don't ever remember having hard cider I disliked..and after 1 glass, no one cares..LOL..Rick

Red Delicious is the absolute best for picking off the tree and eating. It also makes perfectly delicious apple pie. We have not tried canning them, but if you cut them into slices, they freeze very well. We tried one time to make apple sauce from the red delicious. That did not work out so well, but we were able to "salvage" it and turn it into apple butter.

We also have a yellow summer apple tree, and those yellow apples make very good apple sauce.

At my old farm I used to have Yellow Transparents. I believe that is the same as what you are calling summer apples. They come due in very early August.

They will almost over ripen on the tree to the point you can smash them in your hand. One of my favorite apples. I think they are commonly known as a Lodi. I am hoping to find some for next spring to put in at my new place.

The professional cider guys are picky about varieties- bet you could find out pretty quickly through Google.

John I grow Goldrush, Enterprize and Liberty among others but these are the new disease resistant types. Scab free without spraying, good all around.

Liberty is a nice disease resistant variety.
We do custom pressing at my family's cider mill, and it seems the best tasting cider comes people that bring in a mix of varieties.
Two that I don't like for cider are Macintosh and Red Delicious.

Most say a mixture of apple varieties is best. Best I ever made was a combination of Grimes Golden and Red Delicious.
ps: The applejack I made from some of it was excellent too.

Honey Crisp or Sweet Sixteen are my favorites!

Both are really crispy and juicy, tart yet just sweet enough. Good for eating fresh, carameled apples, pies, crisps or for sauce.
