65 Yrs. Hot Rod Mag.

Thanks, brings back the good old wanna be times. Didn't see Connie Kalitta and the Bounty Hunter shown or mentioned. He's one I remember watching run in the mid 60's at around 200 and in the low 6's that was impressive back then.

Neat!!!
Poke
ice! Thank you for posting the link. Enjoyed. As for the white Mustang with the "authentic DOHC Indy engine", I didn't see the "in the valley" exhaust????

I well remember the Connie Kalita and Don Garlits AA Fuel Dragsters of the era.

One of the most impressive spectacles of the era were the much less well known AA Fuel Alterds.

The short wheelbase alterds were little more than a AAFD engine and axles with a driver sitting on top.

Watching Wild Willie Borsch cranking the wheel while heating up the tires during a burn out was a sight to see that none of us will see again.

And Wild Willie ran the quarter miles with his left arm over the "door". Another brave soul was E.J. Potter with his Chevy powered cycle. Had the back wheel on a stand, revved it up with the tire going full speed and had a helper shove it off the stand! -- and lived to tell about it. Reminds me of a toy we got my boy when he was a kid.

....and he is still in it today and had 2 fuel cars in top 10 in points this yr along with a funny car that won a couple. Tough ole buzzard! Kris Karamazines was still owning and driving his top fueler and he is 81 yrs old!! Can you imagine an 80 yr old body getting into that cockpit and enduring the G force of high 3 second runs? And they only run 1000' now too and still hitting 330 mph! OMG

Hot Rod is one of my favorite mag. My model A that I have posted on here now and then was even in it in 1996. Just one picture, not a feature by any means. But I bought every copy I could find!

Found these old pictures of EJ Potter on the internet.

One more thing I thought of about EJ, pretty sure he grew up on a farm and used combine parts to build that cycle.

When I was growing up in the fifties, there were no community colleges, so if you wanted to be a mechanic you had to go to a special school, and there were only two or three of them around the country. Hot Rod Magazine was my tutor and classroom. I really owe a lot to them. Thanks for posting.

If you look around you may find a copy of E.J.'s book "Michigan madman". I got a copy through our local library.

Nice! Thank you for posting the link. Enjoyed. As for the white Mustang with the "authentic DOHC Indy engine", I didn't see the "in the valley" exhaust????

Did you know the new Ford powerstroke has the intake/exhaust setup like that. The exhaust exits in the valley and right into the turbo. The intake/air goes into the top outer sides cyl head, almost looks like its through the valve covers.

At one time I had hundreds of Hot Rod, Car Craft and numerous other related magazines. I can recall spending hours and hours immersed in them. Good clean fum back then and not terribly expensive for a working man. Now just putting tires on a car requires a small fortune and my Big Block Chevelle SS or my Road Runner would be priced way beyond my means. Sad how things change. I bought that SS for $400.00...... :(

Chuck Hanson, one of the former editors, is my mom's second cousin. He's quite a guy with a lot of knowledge about muscle cars!

I've been a subscriber for 50 of those years..In Sept I attended Hot Rod Mag Drag Week day 2 at Topeka,KS and got to see the 6 second street cars.

es, I did. They say 'racing improves the breed' & in this case the time lag was only about 50 years!
