Time flies when you're having fun.......

Dang! I turned 80 years old today. And on January 8, I get sworn in as a County Commissioner. That will keep me occupied for four years.

My 82 year old sister emailed me and asked how it felt to be an octogenarian. I emailed back that I hadn't decided yet.

I don't think I'd want to try to keep up with that woman. She's buried a husband and a boyfriend, she gives piano and accordion lessons, is substitute organist for about three churches, plays her accordion in a polka band on occasion, goes around to nursing homes in the area and plays her accordion to entertain the residents (many of whom are 'way younger than she), etc.

But, we come from a good gene pool. Going back to at least our great-grandparents, all of our ancestors made it to over 90 except for our father. And he farmed the same farm and worked the same workload until he was 85. At 85 a small stroke took him out of the game and a year later a larger stroke got him for good.

And nary a day goes past that I don't thank the Good Lord for the enduring health and cognitive abilities I've been blessed with.

Happy Birthday Goose! I read in another thread that you said today was your birthday and I was going to wish you well. I needed to cut and split firewwod and this was the first sunny day we had. So I had to get out while the gittin' was good.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Goose!! Hope you have many more and productive ones at that. Sister sounds like a rolling stone, gathering no moss!!

Happy eightieth Birthday. So many don't make it that far. Just got word that my next door neighbor passed this morning. He was in a bad accident last April, and never did come out of it. I'm not sure of his age but it is in the upper 60's.

Happy Birthday to you also; sounds like you are a "young 80".

Make sure you blow out ALL 80 of those candles now!

Have a good one.

Goose I am really glad you have such good health and longevity.

The young need the old to help guide them through this life.

So a Happy Birthday to you!!!

Peril Harbor sure made remembering your birthday easy. LOL

So now that your a "politician" do you think differently of your subjects/us peons???? LOL

That is great, Happy B-Day.

My dad is 74 now and is in great health, he runs and exercises 4 times a week. He will likely live to 90. (he might outlive me)

Happy birthday Goose. My family was never blessed with long life genes. Perhaps that's good, knowing some of the characters involved. LOL Hope you have many more. When my step mother turned 80 it bothered her to no end. She said no other decade birthday ever bothered her but number 80 got to her. She's now 91 and going strong.

It's been a learning experience, so far.

I've attended a lot of meetings as a visitor with no input, just to listen and hear what's going on, attended a couple of seminars for elected officials, etc.

Twice as smart as when you were 40, and 8 times as smart as when you were 20. Wisdom is Logarithmicish. Jim

To be honest, I'm six years older than my wife and she insists I'll outlive her, just looking at family histories, although right now she's still active as ever with minimal physical issues.

Guess we'll find out someday.

Congrats!! My grandparents were all active into their late 80's, early 90's. My wife's family also, but she is 6 years younger than I am. I will be 60 in a month.

Goose, I've read all the replies and so far no one has said " I've got you by ten years, you young'un". LOL Not trying to make you feel old. You should think if it as being one of the most experienced members of the group. Jim

Happy birthday! At least you bring some wisdom - or at least experience - to the commisioner job. ;)

Paul

Happy Birthday Goose. Let us know how life is as a county commissioner. I am seventy and went to work about 5 years ago for the county. I was summer help the first year then they made me part time. Only had two days off so far this year. Was thinking about running for commissioner in two years when term expires.

Happy Birthday......and many more! I popped 80 years young last July. Kinda fun being this old and still feeling pretty good and navigating under my own power. That and being able to be a little ornery now and then.....

Creating it is called logarhythmicishism. Or logarhythmicismitic....I always confuse the two!

I'll keep you posted.

Here in Seward County, NE, we meet every Tuesday morning, plus there are other committees the commissioners are on.

We have a special meeting tomorrow morning to assign the committees and other duties for the upcoming year. Tentatively, I'm down for the Aging Services Commission, Upper Big Blue River NRD Liaison, Solid Waste Management Board, Planning and Zoning Board Liaison, Veterans Service Committee, Liaison to the Weed Committee, Buildings and Grounds Committee, and Liaison to the Emergency Manager.

Our big issue now is we're getting down to the wire on building a new County Jail and Criminal Justice Center, which we need badly. Last year, the county spent almost $200K just boarding prisoners with surrounding counties because we didn't have the capacity ourselves. It's a $12 million project, and interestingly I haven't heard any public opposition to it.

I've attended a lot of meetings on all of this as a spectator to get the feel of what's going on. Here, it pays respectably for what is basically a part time situation.

Like I said, I'll keep you posted.

Happy Birthday, young man. I'm not that far behind you at 77. I was thinking about slowing down! Now I feel guilty that I should not slow down.

From some of your previous posts I thought you were in SD.

I often think that the gene pool that it took to survive the harsh conditions when our ancestors settled here are what has largely contributed to the longer life many of us enjoy.

Praise the Lord.

Happy Birthday Goose.........I'll catch you next June at 80. I don't believe anybody should hold office until they are 75! By then you have a few smarts and not looking for graft.
