Old (ish) barn

Article in one of the "local" papers the other day, thought some of you might like it...

My old barn is a few years older (built 1913) but much smaller at 40x30, and semi unused now (mainly storage)

I know this is not a really old barn compared to some corners of North America, but this corner of the prairies was only settled in the late 1800s

Interesting story, old barns like these speak for themselves in some respects. One of ours had one silo like that.

LOL ! Thanks Jim ! I've got some more modern photos somewhere of this old place, but this old photo is unique for sure, given its age and that it came from the original owners of the farm.

Thanks, I just switched from Corel Photopaint to Adobe Photoshop (Our University switched vendors and I can get it W/O department cost) so It is my obligation to get friendly with it. They can do very similar tasks, but the menus are far apart. It worked pretty well on this one. Jim

It's awesome. I looked for years to find some plans to build one of Sears round barns that they used to offer. I never did find any. There is ONE standing in the state of Kansas. My goal is to go see it and build a barn back on the farm. Like the article says, we have realized that a good shelter belt or three sided building will do just fine for cattle. I have only machine sheds here since the original barn blew down in the 90's. I use one to feed out of, but it would be nice to feed out of a barn and I could reclaim the lost machinery space due to feed wagons and bales. It would also be nice to have a building without a concrete floor. All of the big buildings are concrete floors and I wish I had some dirt.

I like those old barns but they are gradually disappearing. My great uncle Jack had one built in 1924. Gambrel roof with a lean added later to the West side . It still stands but the land was sold in the 1940s and the current owner does not use it and is gradually letting it deteriorate. I do have the original blueprints if I ever want to build a new one :)
This photo of Jack and his horses was taken when the barn was quite new.

You ever get up NW of me.....MN Hwy 4 between Paynesville and Sauk Centre? There is a wood (?pretty sure) silo inside of a barn in Meire Grove, just poking through the roof. Often tempted to tell the folks at The Land Magazine about it, for their back page feature story. Could be an interesting history.

Here"s my home place, Belgrade, 1952, building the barn around the silo.....

Notjustair: There is a round barn at Farmington, Missouri that was displayed at the Worlds Fair in St. Louis in 1904. Barn appears to be in fairly good condition. It is located adjacent to a Farm and Home Store, who I believe now owns the barn.
