Road trip through mid-Wales

Absolutely beautiful country. One thing I have noticed in the pictures is the lack of trash laying around the countryside like we have here in the U.S. You guys evidently keep everything spotless. You just need to learn how to spell the King's English. Those road signs don't make any sense, much less being pronounceable. :)

RETIRED FARMER ... you are correct....we ARE a "trashy" bunch compared to what you typically see anywhere in the rural areas of the UK. We've been ... at one time or other from the southern part of England up into Orkney off Northern Scotland. Our last trip to UK was pretty much a circular trip around WALES. The farm owned / operated B&B's are GREAT PLACES to stay and you feel at home!!

Wales agreed to a 'king' after the Normans won the main battles- but insisted on one that didn't speak Norman French. The winning Norman leader gave them his son as the 'Prince of Wales'- boy was about 6 months old and didn't speak French so that little demand of Wales council was met. This might be the cause of signs in 'Baby Talk'. Teasing Alert! Old Celtic speech written down in Latin characters with some old 'Runic' or Greek forms carried over- especially in place names. The Basque country of Spain and France has some similar signage- old tongue and ancient spellings influence the later script or just flat out no new script used by the locals being stubborn. Welsh, Irish, Scots nationalists often make a point of NOT using Kings/Queens English. Another Teasing Alert!--Canadians have similar situation in Montreal/Quebec, some of the descendants of losing side in big battle years back still won't speak 'English' in many social occasions or in courts just to aggravate the 'English'/tourists from US. Clean roads and ditch's, park areas can be the local neatness -- or the local public drunkenness laws that have the convicted imbibers doing community service picking up trash and lots of available labor to do it. (warned ya). RN.

Beautiful pictures of a wonderful part of the world. Those road
signs remind me of the Slovakian that went to the optometrist and
was asked if he could see the eye chart and replied, See it, I know
the guy.

Hi Wizzo, great photos. Very scenic country.
Brings back good memories of my wife and I's
vacation in UK visiting my cousins. I have
cousins in Cardiff and Bangor, so we drove
north from Newport to Bangor. One of stops was
at the canal in Llangollen and the Pontcysyllte
Aqueduct. My cousins tried to teach us how to
pronounce the Welsh place names. I think we
were slow learners.

Thanks for sharing

May be senic country but don't think I could live there. Not enough of the flat land like in the middle of the second picture. I hate hills and more so mountains.

When you have problems with heights even from a 6' steplader driving thru those places is terifying. I have trouble if there is a drop off beside the road, even at times just a ditch. But on a road with a drop off to the side of 15' I get so nervous I can hardly stand it. So now do you see why some hate that lay of the land. A few years ago I was supposed to go down to eastern KY. The roads just got to me so bad I never made it to where I was supposed to go and just a mile from there. It got to me so bad that I had to pull into the first parking lot I saw and just started baulling so hard I could not shut the engine off for a half hour. When I was finally able to get settled down I just turned around and headed for home. When hills get to you that bad there is no way you can like them. If you do not have the height problems then yes you could like things. Me just driving the combine over an overhead across a road was all I could stand.

We visited and stayed with some of my wife's family in the little village of Cymaman back in 1985. We had a ball, they took us all over south Wales and into England. We did stay a few days with her Dad's cousin in Windsor and got into London several days on the Tube and saw all the major sites.
