What is the best way to plant into grass...sod this Spring? Planting corn and soybeans...southern MN...leaving overwinter for wildlife. If corn is still left will combine. Have plow, disk, batwing mower, sprayer,IH 480 disk could leave wings up and IH 800 planter. Thanks mnjoe

Not sure I understand if you want to "no-till" or plant conventional. I spray the sod with glysophate and plow a couple of weeks later. Then disc and plant.

Up here in the tundra we don't have the 'couple weeks' is the problem. We go from snow on the frozen ground to corn sprouting in those 2 weeks.

Makes spring burn down or heavy tillage very difficult around here. By the time you get those accomplished in spring, you are near June a lot of years. Which is ok for a food plot, but not to hope to harvest some.

Basically the 2 options tho, sprat it down, plant into the sod. An 800 planter works pretty good for that actually. Hope you get an early dry spring so the sod greens up so you can spray it to kill it and have time to plant.

Or, plow th sod, disk it down, harrow it level. That needs an early dry spring as well, with a little time in between. Often up here sod ground tens to be too wet ground, making it iffy to get it worked up in a less cooperative spring.....

I use a sod cutter to enlarge my small garden or flower beds. Pick up sod with FIL. The ugly sod/weeds goes on mulch pile. The good stuff is used to fill in bare spots in lawn.

Not much input on exactly how to plant, buy watch out you dont run afoul of FSA. Planting a food plot, then later harvesting is asking for problems I would think. UNLESS you are strictly a hobby farmer or hunting preserve and have no "real" crops grown. And you definately dont want to do this if you have crop insurance. You will screw your APH up if you mix food plot grain in with crops grown for harvest.
