With a bare bone tractor, no battery, a negative ground, how would I tell if these items are 12 or 6 volt.

If it has a charging system, the generator will be either marked, or have a serial #. Delco generators that are 12v usually have a red tag. Black tags are 6v. (paint is cheap though) If the blbs have 12v numbers, and the coil has 12v written on it I would go with 12v. The starter will work with either, and spin correctly. If it has an alternator (aluminum housing) it is also likely 12v..Jim

Most bare bones tractor if it is back in the years like 1940 t0 the early 1960 are usally 6 volts. The best way to find out is put a voltage meter to your battery take a reading on it find out if it is 6 volts or 12 volts. If converting over to a 12 volt system best is to do is a altenator (delco Remdy is will liked) because they have the voltage regulator built in side of them plus there easy to wire up. Some of my older tractor I have converted ovet to 12 volts and used a 12 volt generator with a 12 regulator.

As I said, "NO BATTERY" I have a starter, generator, coil....no markings. How would I tell if it is 6 or 12 volt system.....

if it is negative ground, good chance it is 12 volt, most of the early 6 volt were positive ground, can you connect generator to a 6 and then a 12 volt battery and see which one makes it motor correctly, like a dc motor would. six volts would probably not spin a 12 volt generator.

If the gen has ever been rebuilt , it may have the voltage stamped on the outside . Why not just start fresh with a 12v. 10si Delco alt ? Cheap and simple. Gen's are a PITA....
