Swedish Bridge

Here's the Swedish built bridge we tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1999. I was working for a defense contractor. They also ran the M1070 HET built by Oshkosh carrying the M1 Tank over the bridge. No damage to the bridge. Hal

That is a heck of a span! I presume the bridge is semi portable or easy to deploy and take up again, making the engineering quite something.

Years ago the Army had a tank mounted bridge that could be laid out across a river, crossed by the tank, and picked up again on the other side. Army Engineers also used a bailey bridge, which is a manually set bridge constructed with panels. We used them in SF. google Bailey Bridge....

I remember reading that the Army wanted a bridge made of carbon fiber (because it's so light and strong). But the engineers said they would only get one tank across it because when the other crews saw how much it flexed they would refuse to use it, even though the flexing is by design.

James, you are thinking of the AVLB (Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge). They still had them in 96 when I retired.

This is the latest one.

The first of this type was based on the M48 tank hull, then the M60. The newest is on the M1 hull.

Saw one at Ft Hood. Mounted on the M60. Don't know what happened. But I heard a groan and the bridge came down on the main frame. No one hurt except for some pants cleaning and some minor frame damage.

(quoted from post at 09:46:32 12/03/14) That's amazing!
Without stirring the pot too much - why doesn't that structural technology find its way into our roadways and infrastructure? or, is it just temporary? not durable enough?

Imagine the traffic jams that would cause! thousands of vehicles trying to cross one of those at 10 MPH!

 lol just build dozens of them, all lined up next to eachother. It'll be the widest bridge in the world! 40lanes wide!

...then merge them all back into two lanes on the other side ha!
