Some of you guys know that I pastor a small church,When it was time for me to preach Sunday mourning, the congeration presented me with a check to pay my mortgage off.It was only 2200.dollars,but since my wife lost her income it was a blessing.I am one of the old fashion preachers who mows the grass, oversees the building programs, and preaches and refuses to be paid.GOD IS GOOD

Congratulations. You must be well thought of within your congregation. Most of us relate well to a pastor who is 'one of us'. Jim

CONGRATULATIONS, God is good indeed. I remember the feeling years ago when I paid off and burned the Mortgage on our present farm, what a great feeling of peace freedom and joy. Its also funny how when I was young and had to borrow money interest was HIGH but now that I'm older and have money to invest, interest is LOW grrrrrr lol

Its kinda like Dave Ramsey says, a paid off mortgage has replaced the BMW as todays status symbol............

James,...All The Time! What a true Blessing You must Be to your Congregation! For the Lord to Place that on their Hearts! Congratulations. You and you family just got a whole bunch of breathing room. Many of us here share your Joy in having that debt Laid-By!!!
I bet there is something the Lord has for you to do Now, That your Mortgage is Laid by, something You couldn't, or would have been able to do if that mortgage was still hanging over you head.
Heads Up, Eyes open Be ready!

You are indeed the rare exception.

When I worked at the Cadillac dealership I was sure disappointed in the "preacher" who HAD to have a Cadillac. He could of spread his word just as well in a Chevy and used the extra money saved to help people.

I'm not so sure any of my houses or properties are actually owned by "me." More like the government. My taxes cost more now then any mortgage payment I ever had. My first and only mortgage from 1979 to 1989 was $121 per month. Now my property taxes are more then that and if I don't pay, they take the property away. That does not fit my definition of true ownership. Now my car, tractors and trucks? I guess I can say, for sure, I own them.

Isn't that the truth--I pay over $1100/month taxes on the 3 house/property's i own. only good thing is they generally appreciate in value as motor vehicles generally depreciate.

Were you also disappointed in any of his flock who had Cadillacs? If a preacher is spending his salary, why does it matter to you what he spends it on. Are you also disappointed if he goes to a restaurant? If he buys his suits in a better store? If his couch doesn't have holes in it? Protestants don't take a vow of poverty.

My grandfather was an old fashioned preacher. After WWI he went to seminary, and then he preached until he had a heart attack in the VA hospital parking lot in 1965. There were times when he was preaching at 3 rural churches, he put a lot of miles on cars. None of his churches could pay well, so he also wired houses during rural electrification.

Poor pay and people who worry about how the preacher spends his salary were 2 things that really bothered my Dad.

Wish we could find a guy like you. Our little country church is having problems affording a preacher.

Keep up the good work, you will be rewarded.

In my state (SC), we have to pay annual property tax on vehicles. So, although I have only ever owned used cars and I've always purchased them outright, I guess I don't really own them... On the plus side, because they are all over 15 years old, the tax amounts to less than $25 each annually.
