Just moved in, ceiling plaster board has cracked around the tape (chimney pipe exits through the plasterboard). After we fix it, what will prevent it again? There is an insert in the floor around the stove, any kind of insert for ceiling? hey, I couldn't build a bird house - that's why I'm asking you guys.

we have an insert with a black collar around the stove pipe where it meets the chimney in our ceiling. iirc the insert is framed into the ceiling - not sure, can't remember a long time ago now...

Oj is correct, there is a ceiling adapter that is screwed into the ceiling framing to take up about 14.5 inches or so square. It will have instructions an you will cut out a section of drywall to make a neat repair (safer also) Jim

It is correctly identified as gypsum drywall. Installation of the joint compound and tape and the subsequent skim or topping coats were substandard when installed. I had a woodburning stove in a room with finished sheetrock/drywall/"plasterboard" never had a joint failure because of the heat. Just my .02 worth gobble

It just sounds like who ever taped the ceiling didn't wet the tape. If you use the mesh type tape it should hold up better.

My dad heated with wood. The house got too hot and in the morning too cold. IMO, temperature swings causes wood to expand and contract. My Dad had many cracks in his drywall.

There was a time in the early 60's where electric heat was put in the ceilings. You couldn't stop the drywall from cracking. Thermal expansion and contraction.
