County P55 Ploughman

The last County crawlers were called P55 and based on the Fordson Super Major. 3 point & PTO were options. All were painted yellow, and many were fitted with blades for construction use. Production finished in 1964 when Ford launched the 1000 Series tractors.

Wizzo, where were your pictures taken? They seem to be from a ploughing match /show. Is it local to you?
I used to match plough here in North Nottinghamshire, but gave it up, as I was never going to be any good. Phil

Were those Majors on tracks quite common over there? There were a few of the 4 wheel drives around here, but none on tracks.

The crawlers built by Roadless & County were based on standard Fordson Major skid units which made them cheaper compared to dedicated crawlers built by Cat, IH, AC, Fowler & Marshall.

Plus there was extensive Fordson dealer network for spares & service; and they could be supplied with 3 point & PTO.

Most crawlers were used by large scale farmers on heavy clay soils or steep slopes.

The 2012 All Wales Ploughing Match was held on mid-Wales coast a few miles below Aberystwyth. Each year the Match is held in a different Welsh county.

Anyone interested in photos from ploughing matches, farming shows & old tractor shows?

I noticed that the crawler has two pedals on the left and one on the right. What is that about? Clutch on the right? I almost crashed a British motorcycle when I was a young man - the brake was on the left, and no matter how hard I stepped on the shifter, it would not slow down, ha.

Very nice pictures from a beautiful country!
Thank you!!

Phil - have you visited James Hardstaffe's Fordson collection at Linby in Notts? Real nice guy with amazing restored Fordsons & Fordson conversions which he uses at working days.
