I am helping with an Onan genset in an older RV.it is a BGE 4000 watt that loses polarity. The brushes are clean, but the brushes have to be flashed to get it to charge. Any ideas? Aaron

Need to know what you have. Model and serial number. Sounds like your field flash circuit is not working. Comes out of the control board.

Some quick test. First are the slip rings clean. They are the part that the brushes ride on. They should be a light copper color not dark.Clean them with a plastic dish washing pad or some light sandpaper. But not with anything that has metal in it.
To check the field flash. Put the positive probe from a volt meter.On the F1 brush. The negative probe on the F2 brush. Crank the engine and you should see DC voltage.If not check the wiring.I don't think you have a major problem since you say it does run and produce power.
Dirty slip rings and stuck brushes were a common
problem. For units that sat a long time.

request one. Post an email address and one of my guys will send you one for free. I can fix generators but the PDF file stuff. Gives me fits.

Yes I am still around. Still making a certain company mad. Stroke in July has slowed me down but not stopped me.Still delivering liquid feed.Last count was 16000 gallons in one month. Just about wore out the tanker truck. Didn't know cows could eat that much.
