International B275

I'm currently looking for someone that may have info on where I might find a good hydraulic assist power steering cylinder for my B275. My research has lead me to believe that a international B414 might be able to be used. Thank you.

I've got power steering on my B275. It was a
generic add-on kit. Uses a linkage sensor to
make the assist cylinder work, kind of like a
lot of old Mack trucks used to have along with
early 60s Ford cars. Powered by a stand-along
power steering pump that is belt driven.

If you used a power steering set-up from a B-
414 - what do you plan to use for hydraulic
power? A divider and priority valve?

There are other British series tractors similar
to the B275 that have power steering and
engine-driven dual hydraulic pumps. 424 maybe?
I've got photos of that setup somewhere.

This tractor has a frontend loader on it and appears that it came from the factory that way with hydraulic assist. My steering cylinder is leaking pretty bad. I took it to an hydraulic service shop that repairs hydraulic cylinders but they didn't want to mess with it.

I forgot to mention that the power steering is run off the same pump that the tractors 3 point hydraulic system operates on. I put a new pump on the tractor I believe it's rated at 7gpm.

Sounds about standard for those tractors. I had a 3444 TLB which, obviously, had no three point hitch. It had a dedicated power steering system. There was also a selector valve which diverted all power steering flow to the main hoe valve to assist functions there. It was a great machine.

jdemaris exhibits more knowledge about them than anyone else on here.

Can you find another hydraulic shop?

A photo of the offending cylinder would help.

Where is the leak... at the cylinder rod or in the valve area?

Unless the cylinder or the rod are badly scored, they should be rebuildable.

To my knowledge NO B275 ever left the factory with
power-assist. The B414 had it as an option and the
power came from the same pump that powered the 3
point lift. So at this point, I have no idea what
you have. There WERE aftermarket kits to add
power-steering to B275s. That's what I have.

This is what mine looks like. I had to fabricate
some brackets that were missing from the partial
kit I got for $20.

Here's some info a guy sent me years ago about
power steering in the B-414.

The early models used a splitter valve off the
main hydraulic system to actuate the steering.
Later models had full hydrostatic steering
using a piggy-back pump on the back of the main
hydraulic pump. However, both of these systems
are very difficult to find at salvage yards as
few tractors were equipped with power steering.
To overcome this problem, we built our own
system we used the power steering hand pump and
cylinder off a 915 IHC combine. This also gave
us the added benefit of a tilt wheel. An extra
front crank pulley was installed and a car
power steering pump was used.

Researching the serial number of the tractor revealed it is a 1960-1961 year model. It has a Twin-Draulics front end loader. It is not the trip bucket type but is operated hydraulically. The steering assist cylinder is leaking at the drag link attachment. I took the cylinder apart and replaced the four small o rings on what I believe is the spool. These o rings were flattened and hard. After replacing these o rings this seemed to slow down the leakage somewhat, but it still seeping. Any ideas on which seal maybe leaking?

Many thanks all those that responded to my inquiry. I think I'll take it to a differnt hydraulic shop and have them look at it.
