absolutely shocked

I took a front tire off the M Farmall to town to have the tube patched or replaced. The tire store was crowded so I told the service writer I didn't need this tire until April. This was a place I had never patronized before. The store called that afternoon to tell me the tire was ready. I drove to town to pick it up, No charge-- I asked who did the work so I could buy his lunch tomorrow--don't worry about it, no charge. I couldn't give my money away, and this was a rim with no centre. I will definitely buy tires there in the future..Ellis

I've had things like that happen before, and like you when I need parts or service I check with them. However, its usually been at a smaller local owned mom n pop type of a shop NOT a big corporate box store.

Those are the good ones. I took the pickup in to town to have it looked at and see if it had a code on it. Ken had it all day. I went to pick it up and he said there weren't any codes but bring it back the second it does something fishy. He wouldn't let me pay him. You can bet I always keep my business there.

I needed a tire removed from a rim and and the local tire shop did it for free, but when I took a tire in to the same shop for what I thought should have been covered by the road hazard warranty, I paid $17. I'll be a little more careful next time.

My mechanic of 30 years is like that- always fair with the price, and if it was just something minor that didn't take significant time, no charge. Had an '85 GMC 6.2 diesel, running real rough, I figured injector pump rebuild. He called later in the day- return line needed drained, no charge. He could just as easily have given some hoked-up story about bezel shafts and such, charged me a few hundred, and I'd have never been the wiser. Maybe that's why he's thrived over the years, while others come an go.

But he's in his 50's and says his days in the business are numbered- he's able to do less and less as cars get more sophisticated and require computers and tools that only the dealers have. He said if it wasn't for the never-ending need for brake jobs, he'd be pretty hungry already.

I asked if the physical demands of the job were getting harder- he said mainly having to get on the floor. Getting down is not so hard, but have to plot how you're going to get back up before you do so.

I understand why shops will give a little to get a little, but think about how auto repair works. The guy in the back probably gets paid by piece work, so he got paid nothing. These situations are why I went into business for my self. The manager of the store wanted to give you something so you come back and buy a full set of tires. It only cost the manager a couple bucks on his monthly bonus, but it just took $10 immediately from the guy who did the work.

The tire place I have been dealing with ever since I moved here 26 years ago fixes flats for free for me lots of times. The salesman told me their head office lets them fix one or two flats a day for free for customer relations purposes and in case they have made a mistake fixing a flat that has to be refixed. I don't bother to price tires anywhere else because they always treat me well. The guys in the back get paid by the hour so it doesn't come out of their pocket.

We have a mobile tire fixer in our area. Took a tire with a slow leak off my 90 Dodge 4x4. 10.5x31. $8.00. Had a flat on my 2001 Dodge 2WD. 205 street tire. Mobile man only here Thu, Fri & Sat. This was a Monday. Took it to local mech shop. $18.00. Next time I'll wait.
