John Deere 168 loader

I noticed a 168 loader for sale that was on a 4010. I have a 4640, are the mounts the same for both tractors? Thanks for any information.

No, Your JD 4640 is a wide framed tractor. The 3010-4440 where all the same width (around 22 inches) but your tractor is too wide (around 26 inches) for those mounts.

You would need JD 4630,4640,4840,4650,etc. mounts.

If JD offered only one width in the frt bracket(parts key 8) & crossbar(parts key 14) then why won't the 168 fit the 4640. I have no experience with a 168 because the dealership I worked sold NONE of the 168's and only a limited number of 4640's. I was thinking 4640 fuel tank was wider but not the frame.

yes that loader and frame will fit. 168 loader was a wider at the mast then the 158 loader to accommodate the wider hood of a 4640.168 loader is the same width as a JD 725 loader. The width between the frame rail are the same between 4640 and 4020 just the hood is wider. The standard bucket is a 8 ft for a 168.

Yup the frame itself on a 4640 is the same width as the 4010 . The 4640 had a cast iron weight under each of the radiator screens that made them look wider at the frame. They come off. not sure why they had that cast piece there they weren't very heavy maybe it was just for protection for the screens because they stuck out past the frame about 5 inches.

Well guys all I know from mounting a few hundred loaders is that the JD 4640s used a different bracket than the narrower frame loaders. I never mounted a 148-168 new but have mounted may 265 720, and 740 loaders. They all called for a different bracket for the 4640 then the smaller tractors.

Moline guy measure the distance across the frame rails and then compare it. It is possible that the mast on the newer loaders was different because of the wider fuel tank. The older brackets did mount lower so they MAY fit since they did not extend up over the frame rails much.

IF all else fails you can make it fit with a torch and welder.

They will fit the difference in the brackets for the 168 loader is that the holes that the loader bolts to are farther from the tractor frame then on a 158 so the brackets have to be 168 brackets. So to make a 168 loader work on any of the tractors without any modification they needed 168 brackets. His brackets are the right ones if the loader is mounted to them now.

The 720/725 loaders used the same frt bracket & crossbar as a 148/158 & 168. 740 only offered only one crossbar & frt mounting bracket for RC tractors.

Having put more hrs on a 4630 & 4640 Useing the same JD 168 Loader Than I care to admit to. It will fit.
Tx Jim expanded view is Spot on, We ordered our 168 to fit a 4630 initially so it was simply a bolt off, bolt on process to transfer ours to the 4640. So if there are different width #14 I do not know.
What I am Dead sure of is You will have to remove your Front Wt Bracket to install the Loader brackets. Most folks will need a ftont wts from time to time.... JD made a Narrow Front wt Bracket to replace # 8! So your loader brackets and "a" front wt brackets can all be in place When needed. It is a Major PIA to have to drop of the loader brackets, just have a wt bracket in place when it is needed.
Hope this helps!

TxJim your going off of the parts catalogue. I am just telling you that the BUNDLE NUMBERS with NEW loaders where different. Maybe it was some small parts that where different but WE KEPT BOTH Bundles when we mounted loaders.

EASY SOLUTION MEASURE THE DARN FRAME RAIL WIDTH!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the replies and information, loader is quite a ways a way from me, and I found out it does not have a grab fork, so I will keep looking. Looking through thouse ads I noticed the jd loaders seem to stick out quite a ways ahead of the front wheels, but the Du-als seem to sit back closer to the front wheels, I may decide to go with a du-al instead if I find one in my price range and condition, Thanks again for all the information.

I agree easy solution is measure frame.

All I have to go by is JD parts as I have no mounting instructions. Bundle #s for different tractors and wider frames could be 2 totally different things. I also have assembled/mounted JD implements during my employment at a JD dealership. I think if JD sold kits for wider frames then there should be repair parts for wider frame bundles???
